DAR ES SALAAM: SIMBA assistant coach Selemani Matola has warned that his side faces a difficult test against Namungo as the unbeaten Mainland Premier League leaders prepare for today’s encounter at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Simba, who have recorded nine victories to collect 27 points and sit comfortably at the top of the table, face a stern test against an in-form Namungo side, who have climbed to sixth place with 15 points after winning their last three matches in a row.
Despite Namungo’s recent impressive form, the big question is whether they can end their poor run against the league leaders. In their last five meetings, Simba have won four times, while the other encounter ended in a draw in April 2024.
But despite Simba’s historical advantage, Matola acknowledged Namungo’s recent impressive form, noting that their three consecutive victories underline the challenge awaiting Simba, despite the hosts’ determination to collect maximum points.
He said the team had returned to Dar es Salaam and immediately entered camp to prepare for the encounter, insisting that the technical bench was working to ensure the players were ready for the contest.
“Honestly, it will not be an easy match. Namungo are among the strongest and well-organised teams in the league. Their last three matches have all ended in victories, which tells you the kind of opponent we are facing,” he said.
However, Matola expressed confidence in Simba’s preparations, saying the players were focused on securing all three points despite the quality of their opponents.
He also appealed to Simba supporters to turn out in large numbers at Uhuru Stadium, describing their backing as important to the team’s performance.
Matola said Monday’s encounter was particularly important as it would be the team’s final league assignment before the FIFA international break, which is expected to last three weeks.
Meanwhile, Namungo head coach Juma Mgunda said his side was well prepared for the challenge, describing Simba as a quality opponent whose position at the top of the standings reflects their strength.
Mgunda insisted that respecting Simba should not be mistaken for fear, adding that his players understood the demands of the fixture and were ready to compete.
“We know we have a difficult match against a good team with quality players. Simba have everything required to be a strong side and they are currently leading the league. We respect them, but that does not mean we fear them,” he said.
He added that his technical bench had developed a specific game plan for the encounter, stressing that football matches required different tactical approaches depending on the opposition.
