FC Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has publicly criticized Karl-Heinz Rummenigge for disclosing his abstention during a vote on sporting director Max Eberl’s contract.
The internal divide surfaced in mid-September when SPORT1 reported that Rummenigge had withheld his vote on the extension. Rummenigge subsequently confirmed that stance in a media interview, drawing sharp words from his long-time colleague.
Addressing the friction in an interview published by Welt on Friday, Hoeneß expressed regret over the public revelation. “I find it a pity that he said that publicly, that was not necessary,” Hoeneß stated.
At the same time, the 75-year-old defended the club’s internal democratic process. “I don’t understand the excitement about it. We are a very democratic club. Everyone has the right to represent their opinion, I have also voted against a decision on the supervisory board before,” he said, noting that an overwhelming majority backed Eberl’s extension.
Despite the public divergence, Hoeneß insisted that his personal rapport with Rummenigge remains unaffected. “Our relationship is completely intact. It is even better than ever,” he emphasized.
The contract dispute follows an earlier period of scrutiny from club leadership regarding transparency and contract costs. Hoeneß acknowledged that he, Rummenigge, and Herbert Hainer had previously held critical reservations.
Those concerns were addressed during an internal discussion with Eberl. Following that exchange, Hoeneß noted, Eberl has performed well and taken the right development.
