Barcelona defender João Cancelo hit back at online critics following a difficult performance in a 4–2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes, posting a defensive message on social media referencing the pressures of professional sport, SPORT reported.

João Cancelo Responds to Online Criticism After PSG Defeat

The Portugal international shared an Instagram story on Thursday addressing the intense scrutiny that followed Barcelona’s Champions League setback in Paris. Cancelo struggled to contain PSG winger Désiré Doué, picked up a yellow card in the first half, and lost track of Fabián Ruiz on the fourth French goal, which left the midfielder free to score into an empty net.

“From the stands, everyone is a specialist. I’d like to see them enter the field and handle the pressure,” the full-back wrote in a post accompanied by Michael Jackson’s track “They Don’t Care About Us.” In a subsequent post featuring a photo of himself, he added: “Who cannot doubt himself is me.”

Defensive Struggles Revive Familiar Questions

The widespread sharing of match clips highlighting his defensive miscues drew immediate parallels to April 2024, when similar struggles in matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid marked a difficult conclusion to Barcelona’s previous European and domestic campaigns. Despite the recurring debates over his defensive reliability in high-stakes fixtures, manager Hansi Flick continues to lean on the Portuguese defender for his tactical depth and attacking contributions down the flanks. Barcelona previously committed to the player through a three-year contract.

Upcomng Test Against Real Madrid in El Clásico

With defensive injuries thinning the squad, Cancelo remains a central option for Flick as Barcelona prepares to visit Real Madrid for El Clásico. While social media reaction to his performance in the French capital remains loud, the defender’s primary response will be required directly on the pitch.
