INTERVIEW: Bayern icon Makaay critiques Yamal and Mbappe's efforts to deny Kane of "deserved" Ballon d'Or

The legendary Netherlands marksman said the Barcelona and Real Madrid stars are "amazing players" but made public claims that they deserved to win the Ballon d'Or unlike Bayern's talisman Harry Kane.

MÜNCHEN (Bulinews) Bayern Munich legend Roy Makaay feels Harry Kane not only richly deserved his Ballon d'Or award, but conducted himself with class unlike some of his closer competitors in the race for football's top individual accolade.

“I think this year compared to other years there were quite a lot of candidates to win the Ballon d’Or. What I liked is that the one [Kane] who won didn’t advertise for themselves,” the Dutch striker said at a media round attended by Bulinews.com.

“The other two [Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe] were just speaking at press conferences that they should win it. In the end, it’s the journalists who decide who wins it and that’s the way it should be.

“You shouldn’t depend on making advertisements like Yamal and Mbappe. I mean, they are all amazing players, I like watching them both but I think [the Ballon d’Or winner] is up to the voters.

“I think [Kane’s action in the build up] was the best approach. It was really nice to see him win it and in my eyes he deserved it. If you score 73 goals, win the [German] double and get third-place at the World Cup [with England]

“It shows he deserved it. I think it’s nice not only for Bayern but also the Bundesliga to say we have the Ballon d’Or [winner] in our league,” explained the marksman who played over 183 games for the Bavarian giants between 2003-07.
