Amid what is the club's worst start to a season in 40 years, Manchester United's issues continue to build. A defeat away at Chelsea on Saturday leaves them with only one win from their opening nine Premier League games.

Consequently, Michael Carrick's men sit in 17th, just above the relegation zone thanks to goal difference, with seven points to their name. In short, Old Trafford is not the place to be right now.

Away against Chelsea, any good work done in the opening 45 minutes was undone by a poor second half. First, Morgan Rogers was given far too much space to run through and score, before Lisandro Martinez then gave away a penalty and got himself foolishly sent off, allowing Cole Palmer to make it 2-0 from 12 yards.

While most of the immediate focus will be on Carrick's expected departure, it looks as though four Man Utd stars could follow him out of the exit door.

According to reports from Football Insider, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford are ‘set to go within months’ as part of a ‘mass exodus’ at Old Trafford.

Indeed, the four senior stars have all been tipped to leave by the end of the season, but football finance expert Stefan Borson believes this could do wonders for he club's wage bill. Putting a positive spin on things, he explained:

“The reality for United is that probably, if you get to the end of the season and you’ve got [Bruno] Fernandes being 33 or whatever…

"You've got Luke Shaw probably leaving, you've got [Harry] Maguire probably leaving, you've got [Marcus] Rashford probably leaving, all of this is great for the wage bill in terms of bringing the wage bill down."

However, he did warn that it could be costly looking to bring in adequate replacements for those first-team regulars. Borson noted:

"But it also means you've got a whole load of players that you need to replace, and United can try and book the trend. "But the reality is the best players are now £100 million. You can choose not to play in that market, but ultimately you have to be absolutely exceptional in terms of your recruitment to be able to succeed."

Lisandro Martinez Also Looks Likely To Leave

Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez looks down

It's interesting to note that Lisandro Martinez is not included on the list of likely departures. After all, the Argentine defender is set to see his contract expire in the summer, and it doesn't look as though he's very happy at Old Trafford right now.

Joe Cole was baffled by Martinez's red card vs Chelsea, claiming it could spell the end for him at Man Utd: “I’m still trying to come to terms with the Lisandro Martinez sending off. I don’t know what his thinking was.

“Whatever the next Man United phase is, I think Martinez’s time at the club has run its course. In a Man United shirt, he’s just at the scene of the crime too often. I think that’s his time done.”

The centre-back's red card this weekend comes off the back of his stunning outburst last month, in which he questioned the club's transfer business under Jason Wilcox. After the 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, he said:

"We needed more players to compete, because many teams bring in other players as well. I expect more [after being asked if United have a Champions League quality team]. Yes, 100 per cent [I expected more investment in the summer. I expect more from our technical director, I have to be honest."

It certainly looks as though the chaos could extend into the summer for Man Utd, with a number of key figures likely to depart.
