(Humeston) -- Stanton is headed to a Class 1A regional volleyball final after pulling off a stunning road upset of Mormon Trail on Monday night.
The Viqueens (17-20) took the first two sets before holding off a furious comeback from the Saints, claiming a 25-23, 25-17, 15-25, 22-25, 15-6 victory. Mormon Trail suffered just its fourth loss of the season, finishing 29-4.
"Man, what an exciting night," Stanton head coach John Mainquist said. "Both towns showed up, both teams showed up to play. Very exciting going to five. Hopefully the bus drive will calm down a little bit. Get ready for our next one."
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle that saw Mormon Trail build a 12-6 advantage behind three consecutive aces from Kaylin Martinez. Stanton rallied with a 12-5 stretch to grab an 18-17 lead, and the teams continued trading points until the Viqueens finished off a 25-23 win. Stanton carried that momentum into the second, jumping ahead 5-0 and eventually pulling away for a 25-17 victory.
Mormon Trail responded in a big way, using its aggressive serving and offensive firepower to take the third set, 25-15. The Saints then erased a 7-0 deficit in the fourth, scoring 18 of the next 24 points to take an 18-13 lead. Stanton battled back within 23-22, but Mormon Trail closed out the 25-22 win to force a decisive fifth.
"So just talking, hey, we've gotta treat it zero-zero, push one point at a time, first to five, first to 10, first to 15," Mainquist said of the message heading into the fifth. "It's exciting."
Stanton responded with another fast start in the fifth, grabbing a 7-2 advantage behind the offensive efforts of Cooper Stephens, Addison Jones and Addy Gettler. Mormon Trail battled within 10-6, but the Viqueens scored the final five points, with Gettler serving out the match and delivering the game-winning ace.
"Mainquist looked at me and he just said, 'Just score,'" Gettler said. "So I knew I had to get it in and over. It was a little short, and I got a little scared at the end, but it fell, so I was happy."
Gettler finished with nine kills and three aces, including two in the decisive fifth set. Stephens led the Viqueens with 14 kills, while Lelainie Foster-Saye added 12 kills and Jones contributed seven kills while reaching 100 career blocks. Senior setter Haylee Joint directed the attack with 43 assists, distributing the ball among Stanton's offensive weapons throughout the night.
"Being able to hear my hitters is a big thing for me, and just knowing that I need to always better the ball for them no matter what is a huge thing," Joint said. "I always want to try my best to get them that perfect set that they need."
Mormon Trail's serving was a major factor throughout the match, with the Saints finishing with 14 aces.
Ellie Poush led the way with five, while Martinez and Gracyn Newton each added four. Martinez also recorded 10 kills, Newton finished with seven kills and 18 assists, and Carlee Martinez paced the Saints' attack with 15 kills and five assists. However, two service errors in the fifth set proved costly as Stanton took control.
The Viqueens credited their ability to move past mistakes and maintain their confidence after losing two consecutive sets.
"Every single time after the ball hit the ground or we made an error, we just said next ball," Gettler said. "We just have to have next-ball mentality. We can't go back and change the point before. We're just with each other, for each other. That's our big thing this year, and we showed that tonight."
Stanton now advances to Wednesday's regional final, where the Viqueens will face the state's No. 1-ranked team, Ankeny Christian, with a trip to the state tournament on the line. The match is slated for a 7:00 PM first serve in Van Meter.
"It's a big opportunity. I'm excited," Joint said. "I think our girls are going to push through practice tomorrow and work really hard for each other."
