● Mbarara City FC Vs KCCA FC – Rwamwanja Stadium | 4 p.m
Mbarara City have built their season around a stubborn defence, but that resilience faces a stern test when they host an in-form KCCA side at Rwamwanja Stadium in Kamwenge on Saturday.
The Ankole Lions have conceded just five goals in seven league matches, making them one of the hardest teams to break down in the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League. Only Entebbe UPPC, with two goals conceded, have a better defensive record.
However, keeping KCCA quiet will be another challenge altogether, with the Kampala side arriving on the back of four consecutive victories and looking to make it five in a row when the two sides meet at 4pm.
Mbarara will take heart from their recent 1-0 victory over Vipers SC, which provided a much-needed lift after a difficult start to the campaign.
The Ankole Lions went winless in their opening four matches but have since shown signs of improvement. Their recent run has included wins, defeats and a draw, leaving them with two victories, two draws and three losses in their first seven matches.
They have scored just three goals and conceded five, highlighting both their defensive strength and their struggles in front of goal.
KCCA, meanwhile, appear to have found their rhythm after a shaky start. Four successive victories have restored confidence in the team, but coach Brian Ssenyondo knows his players cannot afford to take their hosts lightly.
The Kasasiro Boys have sometimes surrendered possession cheaply, while goalkeeper Mutwalib Mugoloofa will need to remain alert throughout the contest.
They will also be looking for more goals from their forwards, with Ivan Ahimbisibwe back at the club and Emmanuel Anyama expected to be in contention for some playing time.
Ssenyondo knows what awaits his team in Kamwenge, having previously coached Mbarara City. He is aware of the challenge of facing a side that has remained unbeaten at home, but believes KCCA’s away form gives them reason to be confident.
“Mbarara City have not lost at home, but we have also had a very good run away from home where we have gotten most of our points this season, so we expect to turn up and know it’s a fortress and win,” Ssenyondo said.
Beyond the three points, the KCCA coach is pleased with the growing belief within his squad.
He believes his players are learning to respond better to difficult moments, particularly after conceding goals, something that troubled them last season.
“When you look at tomorrow’s game, we are a team that is trying to change the mentality. Usually last season we could struggle to come back after conceding a goal, but the manner in which we won our previous game only gives us confidence going into this next game,” he said.
That renewed belief will be important against a Mbarara side likely to make life difficult for the visitors, especially if the hosts can keep the game tight and frustrate KCCA’s forwards.
Saturday’s match will also bring Ssenyondo face to face with his former employers, but the coach insists his focus is firmly on his current job.
“It’s always tough, but now I’m at KCCA, a dream job, and the only thing to do is win tomorrow. Hopefully, we go there, fight and get the three points,” he said.
Ssenyondo also stressed the importance of making the right decisions during matches, particularly when changes are needed from the bench.
Having been pleased with his decisions in KCCA’s previous outing, he hopes to get them right again against Mbarara.
“Sometimes you get to the game and apply the best solutions for that point. Thankfully, the last game we were spot on. Hopefully, in this too, we can read the game well and be spot on,” he added.
KCCA have enjoyed the better of this fixture over the years, although Mbarara will hope their home advantage can help them upset the odds.
In 17 previous competitive meetings between the sides in the Uganda Premier League and Uganda Cup, KCCA have won eight times, Mbarara three, while six matches have ended in draws.
KCCA have scored 21 goals in those encounters, compared to Mbarara’s 12.
The recent league record also favours the visitors, who have won four of the last five meetings. However, Mbarara’s emphatic 3-0 victory on January 7, 2025, is a reminder that they can hurt KCCA when they find their rhythm.
KCCA have also registered convincing 4-1 and 4-0 victories in recent encounters, underlining the threat they pose if given room to attack.
Still, Mbarara’s home performances offer hope that Saturday’s contest could be much tighter.
Mbarara will be without Rogers Mugisha, who was sent off during their 1-0 victory over Vipers SC. His absence will be a setback as the hosts prepare to face a KCCA side eager to extend its winning streak.
KCCA have no major injury concerns heading into the encounter.
The teams also have different targets as they approach the ninth round of the season. KCCA are seventh with 10 points from eight matches, while Mbarara are 13th with five points from the same number of games, according to the supplied standings.
For the Ankole Lions, the challenge is to make their defensive solidity count and turn their home advantage into another positive result.
For KCCA, it is about maintaining their winning momentum, avoiding costly mistakes and finding a way past a defence that has proved difficult to breach.
Mbarara have already shown they can frustrate opponents on home soil. On Saturday, they will discover whether that resilience is enough to stop a KCCA side that is beginning to look like a team with its confidence back.
Elsewhere, the Uganda Premier League serves up a busy Saturday, with five other fixtures scheduled alongside Mbarara City’s meeting with KCCA. Blacks Power host NEC at BCS Sports Complex in Bukedea, while BUL welcome Entebbe UPPC at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru. Both matches kick off at 4pm, the same time Lugazi entertain SC Villa at Lugazi FC Stadium in Najjembe, with the three encounters offering teams an opportunity to strengthen their positions as the league campaign gathers momentum.
Later in the day, UPDF face Kitara at 5pm at Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo before URA take on Vipers SC at the same venue in an 8pm kick-off.
