Serevi: Be winners off the field

Winning on the field accounts for only 10 per cent of a sportsperson’s life, while the remaining 90 per cent is determined by what happens off the field, says former Fiji rugby sevens great Waisale Serevi.

Serevi delivered the message to Ba FC players during the club’s historic four-trophy celebration at the Gujarati Grounds on Saturday, reminding the men in black that their responsibilities extend beyond football.

“Sport is 10% what happens on the field and 90% what happens off the field,” Serevi said.

“The 10% is what people see on the field. Goals, tackles, trophies and the celebration. The 90%, remember this, the 90% is what people do not see.”

He said discipline, respect for parents and family, commitment to training, personal development, decision-making, faith and character were what separated champions from the rest.

“A trophy can be displayed in a but your character is displayed every day through your actions. That is why I encourage every player that comes across my way, be a champion on the field, but become even a greater champion off the field,” he added.

Serevi also urged the players to stay away from drugs and become positive role models for young people in Fiji.

His message came as Ba celebrated a remarkable 2026 season in which the club won the Fiji FACT, Extra Premier League, Extra Battle of the Giants and FMF Inter-District Championship.

The former rugby sevens star congratulated Ba Football Association president Praneel Dayal and his leadership team on the achievement, which came during Dayal’s first year as president.

He acknowledged the contribution of the association’s management, technical staff, coaches, players, sponsors, supporters and families in helping the club reach the historic milestone.

Serevi also reflected on Ba’s special place in Fiji football, recalling how he followed the team as a young boy and listened to football commentaries featuring the famous giant killers.

He described the celebration as a historic moment for the town and encouraged the players to uphold the club’s proud tradition.

The occasion was a reminder that while trophies recognise success on the field, the true legacy of Ba FC will also be measured by the character, discipline and values of its players away from football.
