Chilean tennis players Tomás Barrios and Christian Garin both advanced to the final round of the US Open qualifying tournament, securing straight-set and hard-fought victories respectively, La Tercera reported.
Tomás Barrios opened his qualifying campaign on Court 13 with a straightforward victory against Argentina’s Genaro Olivieri, winning 6-3, 6-1. Olivieri initially seized an early advantage by breaking Barrios in the opening game of the first set. Barrios quickly neutralized the break to level the score at 2-2 before claiming another break to lead 4-2, ultimately closing out the opening set 6-3. In the second set, Barrios broke serve in the third game to move ahead 2-1 and secured another break to build a 4-1 advantage, coasting to a 6-1 finish to punch his ticket to the third and final round of qualifying.
Christian Garin followed on Court 4 in the second match rotation, defeating Sweden’s Elias Ymer 6-2, 7-6(5). Garin dropped his opening service game to fall behind 2-0 in the first set, but immediately broke back and surged ahead 3-2. He added another break to establish a 5-2 lead before comfortably serving out the first set 6-2. The second set proved much tighter. Garin struck first with a break to lead 2-1, but Ymer fought back later in the set to break the Chilean’s serve and level the score, forcing a tiebreak. Garin edged the ensuing tiebreak 7-5 to seal the match and advance alongside his compatriot.
Both Chilean competitors advance to the final hurdle of the qualifying rounds at Flushing Meadows, where victories will secure them spots in the main draw of the US Open. The tournament organizing committee scheduled the concluding qualifying fixtures following the completion of the preliminary WTA and ATP qualification schedules.
