East Mills makes quick work of Griswold, advances to regional semifinal

(Malvern) -- East Mills volleyball picked up its second sweep to start the postseason and advance to a regional semifinal.

The Class 1A No. 10 Wolverines (29-8) needed less than one hour to dispatch conference foe Griswold in straight sets: 25-6, 25-14, 25-11.

“In the postseason, it's just about surviving and moving on,” said East Mills Coach Connie Viner. “I think we won that with no doubt. Tonight was a little slower than I thought it was going to be. But we used it to work on those plays, the passes, trying to speed up the offense, so working on those little things.”

East Mills jumped in front early in the first set, scoring eight of the first nine points before rolling to a 25-6 win. The Wolverines tallied six aces in the opening set to keep Griswold on its heels.

“We've been working on serving in our zones and just trying to hit those spots and being confident when they're serving,” said Viner.

Griswold played its best stretch of the match at the beginning of the second set, holding three leads before East Mills turned a 12-12 tie into a 21-12 advantage with a 9-0 run. The Wolverines closed out the set with a 25-14 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

After a shaky start to the second set, East Mills started fast in the third with a 13-2 advantage behind more aggressive serving. Griswold put together a small 3-0 run late in the set, but that was all the Rebels could muster as East Mills closed out a 25-11 win.

The Wolverines were paced by Ava Grindle, who finished the night with 14 kills and two aces.

“Some of their players weren't here tonight, so I just kind of used that to my advantage and picked on whoever I thought was not going to get it up,” said Grindle.

Ellie Hagen added nine kills, while Jacey Vandenberg chipped in eight winners.

“We've been having a lot of practices and practicing hard,” said Vandenberg. “We just are trying to keep it one game at a time. We don't think ahead. We just focus on the present, get that over with, and keep going down the road.”

Brynn Williams finished the night with 32 assists and four aces for the Wolverines.

The win moves East Mills into a regional semifinal Monday night, when the Wolverines will host Westwood (16-13). The Rebels erased a 2-0 deficit against Sidney on Wednesday to win a five-set match.

After the match, KMA Sports talked with Grindle, Vandenberg and Viner in a video you can view below.

Griswold was paced by six kills from Amanda Houser, while Airika Palmer added four in the loss.
