Hasselhoff’s KITT Was Stolen in the ’90s. Now Interpol’s Find Could Sell for $605,000

A KITT replica that David Hasselhoff used to promote his music in Europe in the 1980s, which was stolen in the 1990s and recovered with help from Interpol, goes up for auction in Zurich on Nov. 7 with an estimate of up to 500,000 Swiss francs.

Carscoops reports that Broad Arrow Auctions expects the car to bring CHF 250,000 to 500,000, or roughly $302,000 to $605,000.

The KITT That Toured Europe With the Hoff

The car started life as a 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. According to Broad Arrow, it was converted to KITT spec in the 1980s by a company called Hollywood Productions using original Universal Pictures plans.

Its job wasn't TV. Paperwork with the car shows Hasselhoff used it to promote his 1985 album *Night Rocker* at concerts and TV appearances around Europe. Afterward it was sold to a Swiss record label.

Stolen, Found and Rebuilt

Broad Arrow says the car was stolen at some point in the 1990s and came back "with the help of the international sleuthing skills of Interpol," as Carscoops put it. It returned without some of its KITT dashboard electronics.

Those have since been replaced. The car now has the voice box, twin monitors, overhead console and the illuminated pedal that fans of the show will recognize. Top Gear reports that the Knight Rider Historians group has inspected it and verified it as the Hoff's car, and that it isn't road legal because of its modifications.

Under the costume, it's still a 1982 Trans Am. That means a 5.0-liter V8 with about 165 hp and a three-speed automatic. Carscoops notes it would struggle to get to 60 mph in under 9 seconds, which is a long way from what KITT could do on TV.

Movie and TV cars have been bringing big money lately. Tony Stark's NSX Roadster from The Avengers just went up for auction too, and it's a 252,000-mile 1991 NSX underneath.
