'We're doing something different again' - Steve Evans on trying to improve Bristol Rovers' away form

'We’ve tried training in the north, we’ve tried training in the south, then travelling. We tried travelling early, then training.'

Bristol Rovers manager Steve Evans has said the Gas have "tried everything" to fix their away form, but insisted they are "doing something different again" for this week's trip to Fleetwood Town.

Rovers have picked up 13 points from seven league games at The Mem this season, which is the fifth-best home record in League Two. On the road, it has been a different story, though.

The Pirates have lost five out of their six away league games in the 2026/27 campaign, with the only victory on their travels a 2-0 win at bottom-of-the-table Crawley Town in August.

Despite their poor away form, Evans' side are only three points behind the play-off positions in the fourth tier and five behind the final automatic promotion spot.

OPINION

They know that they need to change their fortunes on the road, though, starting with a tricky test at Fleetwood on Saturday, who have only lost one out of their opening 10 home games in all competitions in the current campaign.

When asked by Bristol Live why he thinks there is such a gap in terms of performances and results at The Mem, compared to when they play away, Evans said: "Listen, if I could work that out, then we'd be top of the league, wouldn't we?

"Because our performances at home have been very good. We were good today [against Swindon Town]. We were good against Salford.

"We lost to Barnet, and everyone knows it was an injustice. Paul Scholes said to me the other night, leaving the stadium 'Wow, what a win that is because we couldn’t get out of our box second half.' And we were very good.

"But we need to take that industry and that effort and that energy to away games, and we’ve tried everything. We’ve tried training in the north, we’ve tried training in the south, then travelling. We tried travelling early, then training.

"And we're trying as a management team, if something consistently happens or continually happens, you have to try things differently.

"So I'm not telling you what we're doing next week, but we're doing something different again."

After last week's 2-1 defeat against the league leaders Salford City, Evans also spoke about the "sleepless nights" he's had due to Rovers' away form, adding, "We cannot turn up as we've played in the last two or three away games."

Whether the new plan for the next away game works or not remains to be seen, but a win away at Fleetwood, who have enjoyed an impressive home record so far this season, would go a long way to Rovers showing they're fixing their issues on the road.
