Man Utd Legend Explodes At Martinez For 'Absolute Disgrace' At Chelsea After Exit Attempt

Lisandro Martinez has been torn apart by a Manchester United legend following his "absolute disgrace" of a display in the 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday.

The Red Devils failed to capitalise on a decent first-half performance at Stamford Bridge, capitulating after the break for their ninth game in succession without victory in all competitions, and third-straight loss.

Michael Carrick is in major peril as United boss thanks to the disastrous form, but fan fury has so far been pointed mostly in the direction of the players and Director of Football Jason Wilcox.

Nobody can fully escape blame after what became another limp surrender against a Chelsea side not without pressure themselves.

Xabi Alonso's outfit were beaten at home by struggling Tottenham last week for just the second time in three decades and then went out of the Carabao Cup in midweek after losing a penalty shootout at Liverpool.

Martinez played a major part in the latest collapse as he conceded a penalty and was sent off in West London, while playing a part in both the Chelsea goals.

The Argentine, along with Harry Maguire, allowed Morgan Rogers to dribble straight through the middle of the United defence in the 50th minute to break the deadlock.

Martinez was booked shortly after for taking two bites at stopping another attack from Rogers and failing to do either legally, then got himself sent off in giving away a penalty for catching Wesley Fofana in the face at a corner.

Peter Bankes was instructed to review the incident by the VAR, and saw via the monitor that the United defender jumped with a raised arm while looking away from the ball as he scrambled to get back into position after losing his man.

On the TNT Sports broadcast co-commentator Ally McCoist reacted by saying: "I've got that down as ridiculous defending, ridiculous defending."

Cole Palmer converted, despite Senne Lammens getting a big hand on the shot, and the game largely ceased to be a contest thereafter, aside from Bryan Mbeumo's rasping shot against the bar in stoppage time.

Speaking after the final whistle on the international coverage of the clash, former Old Trafford goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel didn't hold back as he parked the blame entirely at Martinez's door.

The Dane was particularly infuriated by World Cup-winner Martinez given it was he who came out publicly to criticise the squad and Wilcox earlier in October when United were beaten 2-0 in the Champions League by Atletico Madrid.

Martinez subsequently apologised but Schmeichel believes those comments were part of a plot to engineer his exit from Old Trafford, and was therefore outraged by the performance in West London given the circumstances.

Schmeichel said he had "no words" for what he had seen, but in reality he had quite a few to express his displeasure.

"I put this solely on Lisandro Martinez's shoulder. This is an absolute disgrace how he played this game. Two weeks ago he came out and he made some very, very strong statements against his teammates, against the football club, and it felt like he was trying to orchestrate a move. He's in his last year of his contract.

"What he did today, honestly I have no words. The first goal... I mean, he's played a World Cup final. Somebody who's played a World Cup final can't defend the way he's defended on the first goal. The penalty... I have no words. I literally have no words [for] how crazy that was. And then he walks off the pitch shaking his head as if he's done nothing wrong. So bad."

The defeat leaves United languishing near the bottom of the table heading into November and Carrick clinging to his job with visits from Roma and Aston Villa to contend with before the international break.

Resuming club football with a trip to Anfield on 22 November, the make-up of the XI on the pitch against Liverpool, and potentially the coaching staff in the dug out, may look very different.
