CAF Women’s Champions League Egypt 2026 kicks off

The CAF Women’s Champions League Egypt 2026 gets underway on Sunday, November 1, in Ismailia, with eight of the continent’s top women’s clubs set to battle for the title and a winners’ prize of USD 600,000.

The sixth edition of Africa’s premier women’s club competition will run until November 15 at the Suez Canal Stadium. Defending champions AS FAR of Morocco and two-time winners Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa are among the teams expected to challenge for the trophy.

Egypt is hosting the tournament for the third time, having staged the inaugural competition in 2021 before welcoming the teams again in 2025. The latest edition further highlights the country’s contribution to the growth of women’s club football in Africa.

The opening day will feature two Group A matches, starting with a meeting between Moroccan side FUS Rabat and Cameroon’s Lekié Football Filles at 14h00 local time (12h00 GMT).

Both clubs are making their first appearances at the continental finals and will be looking to make a strong start to their campaigns.

Hosts FC Masar will then take on Mamelodi Sundowns at 17h00 local time (15h00 GMT) in what promises to be one of the day’s headline fixtures.

The two sides have a previous meeting to draw motivation from, with Masar securing a 1-0 victory over Sundowns during the 2024 edition. The Egyptian club will hope to reproduce that result in front of their home supporters, while the South African outfit begin their quest for a third continental crown.

This year’s competition includes three debutants: FUS Rabat, Lekié Football Filles and Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies. They will join five other sides with varying levels of experience in the tournament.

Group B matches will begin on Monday, November 2, with defending champions AS FAR facing Kawempe Muslim Ladies before Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa take on Mali’s USFAS Bamako.

AS FAR will be aiming to retain the title they secured in 2025, having previously won the competition in 2022. Their main challengers include Mamelodi Sundowns, who lifted the inaugural trophy in 2021 and returned to the top in 2023.

DR Congo’s TP Mazembe are the other former champions, having claimed the title in 2024. The competition has therefore produced three different winners since its introduction.

There is also a significant financial incentive for the participating clubs, with a total prize pool of USD 2.35 million available.

The champions will take home USD 600,000, while the runners-up will receive USD 400,000. The third and fourth-placed teams will earn USD 350,000 and USD 300,000 respectively.

Teams finishing third and fourth in their groups will also receive USD 200,000 and USD 150,000 respectively, ensuring that every participating club benefits financially from the tournament.

In addition to the continental title, the winners will earn a place in the second qualifying round of the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup. They are scheduled to face DPR Korea’s Naegohyang WFC in December 2026.

The final stage of the FIFA competition will take place in Miami, United States, from January 27 to 31, 2027, giving the African champions an opportunity to test themselves against clubs from other confederations.

The CAF Women’s Champions League remains an important platform for the development of women’s football on the continent, offering clubs and players valuable competitive experience, international exposure and financial opportunities.

The eight teams have been drawn into two groups of four, with the top two from each section advancing to the semi-finals on November 11.

The third-place play-off is scheduled for November 14, while the tournament will conclude with the final on Sunday, November 15, at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia.
