The RC Lens travel to Club Bruges on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, with both sides seeking a result that could strengthen their position in the UEFA Champions League league phase.
The match at Jan Breydel Stadium comes after contrasting results for the two clubs in the opening rounds. Club Bruges recovered from a 3-2 defeat by Aston Villa on matchday one by producing one of the competition’s most eye-catching results so far, beating Inter Milan 4-3 away from home.
Nicolo Tresoldi scored a hat-trick in that seven-goal thriller, while Romeo Vermant also found the net to secure a victory which underlined Club Bruges’ attacking threat and their ability to compete with some of Europe’s leading teams.
The Belgian side will look to build on that performance in front of their home supporters. Their attacking efficiency has been a key feature of their campaign, although they will have to manage a Lens side capable of causing problems when it controls the tempo.
RC Lens began their European campaign with a 3-2 victory away to Slavia Prague, but their progress was checked in the second round when they lost 2-0 at home to Sporting Portugal.
Pierre Sage’s team therefore arrive in Bruges looking to restore momentum. They will need to improve both their defensive organisation and their finishing in the final third if they are to take anything from Belgium.
With every point potentially important in the league-phase standings, Lens cannot afford to allow their opponents to gain further confidence after the win at Inter Milan. The French club will also be seeking a more complete performance after failing to score against Sporting Portugal.
The fixture is the first competitive meeting between the two teams. While there is no previous head-to-head record to draw on, Lens face a Club Bruges team accustomed to demanding European occasions and buoyed by its latest result.
Both clubs have three points from their opening two matches, leaving them level before the third round. A victory would move either side closer to qualification for the next stage, making the contest important for both teams despite their different paths so far.
Club Bruges will rely on the confidence generated by their success in Milan, while Lens will attempt to turn their away form from the opening round into another positive result on the road.
Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 GMT, or 21:00 local time in Belgium and France, at Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges.
