South Holt looks to finish season strong despite injuries and adversity

(Oregon) - The South Holt football team is looking to finish its season on a strong note as the Knights prepare to face Northland Christian(2-6), with injuries and a young roster presenting challenges throughout the 2026 campaign.

Head Coach Josh Petersen said South Holt has struggled to turn close games into victories and enters the late-season matchup with a 1-8 record and the fifth seed in its district.

“It's not gone exactly how we wanted it to,” Petersen said. “We lost some tough games early on by close scores. We've had some kids get injured. It's kind of an unfortunate season at this point right now, but we're going to strap up and we're going to be ready to go Friday, so we're trying to get as much done out of this as we can.”

The Knights have dealt with significant roster challenges, with 12 players currently out, including two with season-ending injuries.

Of the 10 players still available, five are freshmen or sophomores, leaving a young group to compete against older, more experienced opponents.

“It's just kind of a daunting task to ask 14- and 15-year-olds to try to go play competitive football against 17- and 18-year-olds, but we don't make excuses,” Petersen said. “Like I said, we'll strap up Friday night and we'll go play.”

Offensively, South Holt has relied on a balanced approach featuring quarterback and running back carries, along with opportunities to throw through play-action passes.

However, an injury to the team's starting quarterback Coltyn Fansher forced the Knights to move  pieces around and adjust their plans.

“We're going to run the ball, get a little play action and do some passing, but we're 50-50, we're balanced,” Petersen said. “We just try to make the best of what we got.”

Against Northland Christian, Petersen said the Knights must be disciplined defensively to limit the opponent's offensive production. He noted that Northland Christian has capable running backs and a quarterback who can move, making tackling and limiting explosive plays especially important.

“Offensively, we need to be able to try to control the clock with the time of possession and keep it in our hands in order for us to hopefully succeed on Friday,” Petersen said.

The Knights also will need to avoid turnovers and penalties that put their offense in difficult situations.

Petersen said negative plays on early downs have made it challenging for South Holt to sustain drives, particularly with its current personnel.

“Our offense right now is not built to be at a first and 15 or a first and 20, and so if we get into those downs early on in the game and get put behind the chains, it's hard for us to sustain any type of offensive momentum,” Petersen said.

Defensively, the focus will be on making tackles, preventing big plays and keeping the game manageable.

Petersen said limiting penalties and controlling the pace could give the Knights an opportunity to compete as they close out the season.

Despite the difficult circumstances, South Holt will take the field Friday with an emphasis on execution and making the most of its available roster as the Knights look to finish the 2026 campaign on a positive note.
