Ghanaian duo Daniel Afriyie and David Acquah were the heroes for FC Aarau as they came from behind to defeat Neuchâtel Xamax 3-1 in an entertaining Swiss Challenge League clash on Friday night.
Both players found the back of the net in the second half to inspire Brunello Iacopetta’s side to a vital victory, ending a run of three consecutive league defeats.
The hosts made the brighter start and took the lead five minutes before halftime when Eris Abedini calmly converted a penalty to hand Neuchâtel Xamax a 1-0 advantage at the Stade de la Maladière.
Trailing at the break, Aarau returned with renewed determination and eventually found the equaliser in the 75th minute through Ghanaian defender David Acquah, whose goal breathed new life into the visitors’ comeback hopes.
As the match appeared to be heading for a draw, former Hearts of Oak captain Daniel Afriyie produced a moment of brilliance in stoppage time, scoring in the 92nd minute to complete the turnaround and put Aarau ahead for the first time.
Just a minute later, former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Alexis Beka Beka added a third goal to seal an emphatic 3-1 victory and wrap up an unforgettable comeback.
Afriyie’s decisive strike continues the former Black Stars forward’s growing influence at the Swiss club since his move from FC Zürich, while Acquah also delivered an impressive all-round display at the heart of defence.
The victory lifts confidence within the Aarau camp after a difficult spell and provides a timely boost as the club continues its push up the Swiss Challenge League standings.
Aarau will now shift their attention to their next league assignment against FC Wil, where the Ghanaian duo will be hoping to build on their match-winning performances.
