For the second week in a row, a Tottenham star has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Week award, which shows the upward trajectory Roberto De Zerbi’s side are on.
Two weeks can be a long time in football, and so it has proved for Spurs, with the atmosphere around the club having been transformed by two back-to-back wins against Coventry City and Chelsea.
Tottenham were being backed to be in a relegation battle by some pundits just two weeks ago, but they now find themselves just three points off sixth place.
The Lilywhites delivered a statement performance at Stamford Bridge, completely controlling the game and emerging deserved 2-0 winners.
The Spurs star, who was deemed the Player of the Match in Saturday’s clash, is now nominated for a prestigious award.
James Maddison was nominated for the Player of the Week award in Gameweek 7 after Spurs’ win over Coventry City, and another Tottenham midfielder has now been nominated for the same award for Gameweek 8.
Mateus Fernandes was outstanding alongside Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park in West London, being at the heart of everything that Tottenham did in and out of possession.
The 22-year-old completed the most passes (102), created the most chances (2), had the most touches (124), delivered the most crosses (5) and executed the most tackles in the game (5).
Tottenham have now confirmed on their website that Fernandes has been named in the six-player shortlist to win the Player of the Week award.

It is hard to wrap one’s head around the fact that the game against Chelsea is the first time that Fernandes has started in his preferred number six role since his move to Tottenham.
The 22-year-old demonstrated exactly why he was so sought after in the summer and why the Lilywhites had to pay £85m to bring him through the door.
One would think that Fernandes has earned a few consecutive starts in his favourite central midfield role on the back of his display at Stamford Bridge.
De Zerbi showered praise on the Spurs midfielder in his post-match press conference on Saturday, admitting that the Portuguese international was one of the best players on the pitch on Saturday.
