Florian Thauvin faced a hostile reception during RC Lens’s match against LOSC Lille, where supporters targeted the captain with sustained abuse over his aborted 2013 transfer to the club, RMC Sport reported. The 125th Derby du Nord at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy ended in a 1–0 victory for Lille on Friday, October 30, 2026, courtesy of a late goal from 40-year-old forward Olivier Giroud.
The atmosphere surrounding the fixture was already tense before kickoff. Following fan disturbances during a UEFA Champions League match in Bruges, Lens management decided against selling tickets to their supporters for the away section, leaving the travelling contingent empty. On the pitch, Lille controlled long stretches of the game under manager Davide Ancelotti, though both goalkeepers—Lille’s Berke Özer and Lens’s Robin Risser—frustratingly kept out attacking efforts.
From his first touches of the ball, Thauvin was met with hostile chants from the Virage Nord and Dogues Virage Est. The abuse stemmed from a long-standing grievance dating back to January 2013, when Lille purchased the then-20-year-old winger from Bastia. Thauvin never played a minute for Lille, instead forcing a move to Marseille after a prolonged dispute with club management.

On the pitch, Thauvin squandered the best scoring opportunity for Lens in the 58th minute. Sent through on goal, he pushed his touch too far and lost a one-on-one duel against Özer. According to player performance evaluations from sports media, the missed chance capped a difficult evening for the veteran midfielder, who had carried an impressive unbeaten run for Lens into the fixture.
With both sides struggling to convert, Lille finally broke through in the 86th minute. Nabil Bentaleb unleashed a long-range left-footed strike that Risser could only parry into the central corridor. Giroud, who had entered the match as a 73rd-minute substitute, reacted quickest to bundle the rebound home for the game’s only goal.
The late strike lifted Lille to second place in the Ligue 1 table, while Lens suffered their fourth defeat of the league campaign. The victory allowed Lille to consolidate their standing in the upper tier of the division, whereas Lens dropped points despite a resilient defensive display anchored by Risser’s multiple saves against Ethan Mbappé and Hákon Arnar Haraldsson.
Lens struggled to establish possession throughout the evening. Midfielder Michaël Cuisance found it difficult to impose himself physically, winning only two of eight duels and managing just three ball recoveries, as reported by sports analysts. Alongside teammate Florian Sotoca, the visitors failed to gain a foothold against a disciplined Lille midfield marshalled by Bentaleb.
Lille’s tactical setup without a traditional central striker initially—utilizing Haraldsson in a hybrid role before introducing Giroud—ultimately paid dividends as the home side wore down the Lens backline. The result leaves Lens aiming to regroup ahead of their next domestic fixture following their fourth league reverse of the season.
