Miami football is the clear frontrunner as the No. 1 team right now.

But they are far from a perfect unit.

The Hurricanes struggled to contain Billy Edwards, Jr., a transfer from Maryland and Wisconsin, in a 38-35 victory over North Carolina.

Edwards threw four touchdowns and did not have a pick on 34 attempts, picking the Miami defense apart.

Miami showed an ability to rally, doing so twice. They were down 21-17 and trailed again, 28-24, before scoring 14 straight.

That big-play offense by the Hurricanes will always keep them in games. When you have players like Darian Mensah, Malachi Toney and Mark Fletcher, Jr., you are always dangerous.

But with a big showdown against Notre Dame on the horizon, figuring out the secondary woes is critical.

Miami Still Unbeaten, And Still Has Darian Mensah

First, the good news for Hurricane faithful: they are undefeated.

Miami is 8-0 and riding high on the arm of Mensah. A likely Heisman Trophy finalist, Mensah threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns, and even added 36 yards rushing.

Fletcher had two rushing scores, the team ran for 142 yards and Tony was unstoppable. The receiver, who might join Mensah in New York City, caught seven passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense did have four sacks and five tackles for loss.

Notre Dame Is Going To Test Miami On Defense

The Hurricanes have faced a couple of strong offenses this year. However, they have benefited from games against the likes of Clemson, Central Michigan, Florida A&M and Stanford.

Florida State put up 35 despite not having an offense like they have in the past Pittsburgh scored 23, but would you consider them elite?

Jonaz Walton and Nolan James, Jr. both have over 400 rushing yards and a combined nine touchdowns. Jordan Faison is dangerous and Micah Gilbert is averaging almost 19 yards per reception.

Notre Dame, however, has the passing attack to really hurt Miami. CJ Carr has thrown for over 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns with just one interception.

The Irish know they need to make a statement after the loss to BYU. And really, this is it for them in their hopes of making the College Football Playoff.
