“As things stand” – Journalist delivers surprise update on contract extension for Liverpool hero

Journalist Ben Jacobs has made a big claim regarding a contract extension for Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, amid doubts over his future at Anfield.

The 27-year-old didn’t hold back about his situation recently, making it clear that not being offered a new deal hurt him, while others received them:

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad. Everyone can see I give 100 percent for this football club, every single day in training, games.

“Of course, I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best. I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine.”

Now, speaking on Give Me Sport‘s market madness podcast [via Read Liverpool], Jacobs claimed that Mac Allister won’t be offered a contract extension by Liverpool, as things stand:

“As things stand, Liverpool do not intend to offer Alexis Mac Allister a new contract. They will be looking for at least one midfielder in 2027. They like Alex Scott, but Chelsea consider themselves favourites for the January window. Lamine Camara and Manu Koné also have admirers within the Anfield hierarchy.”

Does Alexis Mac Allister deserve new Liverpool deal?

Last season, Mac Allister was completely out of sorts, looking a far cry from the world-class midfielder who had shone in his first two seasons at Liverpool.

It looked as though the Argentine’s legs had gone, and selling him in the summer made sense, but he has made an admirable return to his best in 2026/27, standing out as one of the Reds’ most influential players and being hailed by Andoni Iraola:

“I think he’s another of the kind of leaders we have. I think that he has a lot of experience still not being as old, but I think he has been involved in top-level games and has won big titles club-wise and national team-wise. He’s been really good. He arrived as the last one [to pre-season], I think, with Victor [Munoz]. Even Victor arrived a little bit earlier than him.

“But after two or three weeks he went into great form and I think he’s performing consistently well. Sometimes you play well and then you play the next one not so well, but I think Alexis is now in a place where he has been consistently playing well. I hope he can stay there because it’s going to be easier for us.”

Mac Allister’s form shows that he is still very much a footballer in his prime, and that last season looks to be a one-off blip, so handing him a new deal makes complete sense.

He is arguably more important than both Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai currently, and they have both signed recent extensions, so the same should happen to him.

It doesn’t sound as though that is the plan at the moment, however, which feels like a risk by Liverpool.
