DAN ORLOVSKY left the ESPN studio stunned after revealing he just found out what “percent” means.
The former Detroit Lions quarterback, 43, is a regular face on the network after joining as a college football analyst in 2018.
He often breaks down games using stats, so his colleagues were rightly surprised after he admitted he only just discovered the meaning behind the word “percent”.
Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, he revealed: “Hand to God, true story. Do you guys know what percent, like the word percent, is derived from?
“How come it’s percent? So [Paul Hembekides] this morning was like, ‘Joe Burrow, his sack rate is four percent’.
“And I said, ‘Dumb this down for me. No human’s going to hear me say that and I’m going to make them smart’.
“And he goes, ‘Well, what do you mean?’ I said, ‘What does that actually mean?’ He goes, ‘Out of every 100 dropbacks, he’s getting sacked four times. And I said, ‘Is that really what it is? It’s always out of 100?'”
Orlovsky’s revelation led to a stunned silence in the studio as host McAfee was left with his hands on his head.
McAfee replied: “Yeah we all knew it was out of 100, yeah.”
After Orlovsky again insisted he “didn’t know it was out of 100”, he received some teasing from his ESPN colleagues.

One panellist said: “Did you go to school? Did you have a grading system?”
McAfee sympathised with Orlovsky and shook his hand but admitted he was blown away by his admission.
He told him: “I love that you can get on TV and say that now. On NFL Live. I appreciate you leaving no stone unturned.
“But that’s tough dude. Especially with how much you talk about stuff that revolves around percentages.”
Orlovsky added: “I’m not a big numbers or percentages person, though, unless they make sense to me.”
Fans were baffled by his comments too as one wrote on X: “There is absolutely no way. He’s an analyst??”
Another said: “DanO, I like you a lot man. You seem like a great dude. I’m really glad football and sports media worked out for you because damn brother.”
Orlovsky was drafted by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft and spent three years with the team in his first spell.
He then signed for the Houston Texans in 2009 before losing his quarterback spot and joining the Indianapolis Colts in 2011.
Just one year later he switched to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before becoming backup quarterback to Matthew Stafford for his second stint with the Lions.
He finished his career by signing for the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 before being released just two months later and he retired in October that year.
