For the second week running, the Springbok Women were reminded of the uncompromising standards of top-tier Test rugby, as recurring disciplinary lapses and unforced errors paved the way for Ireland to run out 38-17 winners at Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
South Africa entered their final Test of the 2026 season determined to rectify the costly penalty count and over-commitment to the breakdown that derailed them seven days earlier. Yet, after leading 17-14 with just 20 minutes remaining, the hosts unravelled in the final quarter. Two yellow cards and repeated breakdowns in defensive structure handed the fifth-ranked Irish the momentum to score three late tries and run away with the WXV Global Series contest.
The afternoon could hardly have started better for the hosts. Playing into a stiff Cape Town breeze, South Africa drew first blood in the second minute when scrumhalf Unam Tose crashed over off a powerful lineout maul.

The early spark was quickly eclipsed by familiar problems. For the next 25 minutes, Ireland starved the Bok Women of possession by stretching the ball wide. Despite physical defensive efforts led by blindside flank Catha Jacobs, gaps inevitably appeared. Tries from Erin King and dangerous winger Beibhinn Parsons put the visitors in front, while a yellow card shown to South African winger Alichia Arries for a dangerous tackle left the home side scrambling to stem the tide.
Execution errors in the opposition red zone resurfaced as well. When the hosts finally fought their way back into Ireland’s 22, three consecutive attacking lineouts yielded nothing. South Africa stayed patient, and on the stroke of halftime, captain Sizophila Solontsi finished off a clever lineout variation in the corner. Ireland lost Aoibheann Reilly to the sin bin in the build-up, and while Jakkie Cilliers’ conversion shaved the upright, South Africa trailed by just four points at 14-10 with the wind at their backs for the second half.
The hosts initially capitalised on that momentum. In the 58th minute, relentless pressure inside the Irish half resulted in lock Vainah Ubisi powering over. Cilliers added the extras, handing the Bok Women a 17-14 lead and sending the 3 000-strong Athlone crowd into full voice.
The celebration lasted barely three minutes. Ill-discipline and missed first-time tackles instantly surrendered field position. Parsons exploited width in the 61st minute to grab her second try, restoring Ireland's lead at 19-17.
South Africa's hopes took a fatal blow shortly afterwards when Cilliers was yellow-carded for a high tackle. Reduced to 14 players and missing backfield cover, the Bok defensive line buckled. Irish centre Aoife Dalton sliced through to score under the posts with 10 minutes remaining, before Parsons completed her hat-trick just three minutes later off another sweeping wide attack.
Dalton added her second try in the 79th minute, completing a late four-try blitz that underlined Ireland's ruthless ability to punish errors and closed out an otherwise breakthrough 2026 international campaign for South Africa on a sobering note.
