Manchester United have reportedly made a decision on Michael Carrick's immediate future after a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea.
On Saturday afternoon, Carrick’s Red Devils travelled to Stamford Bridge looking to end their eight-match winless run, while Chelsea were looking to bounce back from their Carabao Cup defeat by Liverpool.
During what was a tightly contested first half, United wasted multiple chances to go in front. In the second period, Chelsea took the lead through Morgan Rogers before Lisandro Martinez gave away a penalty, which also earned him a second yellow card, with Cole Palmer making it 2-0 from the spot.
Eventually, Chelsea saw out the match to take home all three points, leaving United 16th in the Premier League table. Following the match, it has been reported that United have now made a decision on Carrick’s immediate future.
According to reports in Spain, via Football 365, United are set to sack Carrick ‘immediately’, with the Red Devils having only recorded two wins in all competitions this season.
It has been claimed that United are ready to ‘offer’ former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann ‘an incredibly high salary to convince him’ to move to Old Trafford as Carrick’s replacement.
The report stated: “The Manchester United board is convinced that the German manager would be an excellent candidate to replace Carrick, and they’re keeping a close eye on him. But he’s not the only name on their shortlist.”
Aside from Nagelsmann, it has been reported that ex-Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank could also be a potential candidate for the Old Trafford hot seat.
Meanwhile, speaking in his exclusive GMS newsletter, senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs said that the likes of Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, Cesc Fabregas, Unai Emery and Fabian Hurzeler are also in the running for the United job.
Jacobs explained: “You've got Eddie Howe, who is a free agent, but there is compensation due nonetheless to Newcastle United of around £3million.
“There is Julian Nagelsmann, who's behind Howe at the moment in terms of internal thinking if they do make a change. Antonio Conte, Cesc Fabregas, Unai Emery, Fabian Hurzeler, all names that have been discussed.”
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, via BBC Sport, Carrick admitted that there is ‘no hiding’ for him and his players.
He said: “There is no hiding from the fact that we haven't won enough games. The boys were in a good place in the first half.
“I think we didn't start the second half particularly great. A bit scrappy and we didn't get going. They made first blow in the second half and in the end that goes on to be the difference.”
When asked whether he expects to be in charge of the team for their next match against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, Carrick replied: “Yes.”
According to reports, though, the board appear to feel differently.
