Pundits in full agreement about 'driven' Trey Nyoni as youngster takes chance

Liverpool youngster Trey Nyoni has been praised by pundits as the midfielder continues to push on and show his qualities while in the senior team.

The 19-year-old emerged as an option for Arne Slot last season, having impressed in his time with the academy, but he was largely used in cup competitions. With a change in the dugout, Andoni Iraola has decided to make more use of Nyoni in and around the senior setup, especially since the exit of Curtis Jones without a like-for-like replacement.

The midfielder has seen some action across all competitions this season, and he has firmly made himself an option for the team in the long term, despite potential links with other midfield options in the future.

That has led to some praise from former Liverpool ace Conor Coady, who knows exactly what it means to be a youngster looking to make their mark and rise through the ranks.

Speaking on Sky Sports about Nyoni before Wednesday's Carabao Cup win against Chelsea, Coady said: "This lad — the way he plays, he plays like a 25, 26-year-old.

"He can receive the ball on the half-turn; he can receive it under pressure. He sniffs out danger... he knows where to be and when to be there.

"He's started off fantastically this season, and I think his minutes — at the minute — are double what he played last year, already, so he's in a good place. He's playing really well, but the biggest thing I can say about him is he's really driven."

It isn't just the former Liverpool man who has seen that quality in Nyoni, with ex-Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison giving his thoughts on BBC 5 Live, as he said: "I know Trey Nyoni's family really well. He's a humble young boy who just wants to be the best.

"I remember when he was at Leicester City, his dad didn't put a lot of pressure on him; he just let him go about his business and play. He's had to bide his time, and it's hard as a youngster to get your chance at Liverpool."

Nyoni will certainly be hoping that his positive start to the season will see him rewarded with even more opportunities to shine, as Iraola looks to his academy options as those who could make the difference for the campaign.

That is something that the youngster has already reflected on, making it clear that he wants to make an impact regardless of the number of minutes he gets on the pitch.

"It’s positive," Nyoni told the Liverpool website about his recent run of form. "My motive has always just been like, whether I’m on the pitch for a minute, five minutes, 10 minutes, 90 minutes, I just try to make the most out of the minutes I get.

"But I think in the last few weeks obviously I’ve had a lot of exposure, which has been good for me. It’s something different, playing a lot of minutes within a short space of time, also adapting. But it has been really good, something that I’ve needed. It’s just good to be playing and obviously just taking in the experience as well, which is important.

Nyoni's latest display against Chelsea has only reassured the thought that he is capable of playing at the top level, as he continues to progress with each appearance.
