Kitara’s exit exposes Uganda’s continental football gap
Kitara was ejected out of the Caf Confederations Cup

Ugandan football suffered another continental setback after Kitara FC’s elimination from the Caf Confederation Cup left the country without a representative in the 2026/27 inter-club group stages.

Kitara, Uganda’s last hope, lost 4-0 to Egyptian giants Al Ahly in Cairo on Sunday, October 25, exiting 6-1 on aggregate after a 2-1 first-leg defeat in Hoima. Hussein El Shahat scored twice, while Mohamed Magdy Afsha and Taher Mohamed added the other goals.

The Royals’ exit raises fresh questions about Uganda’s persistent struggles on the continent. Over the past nine years, KCCA FC, Proline FC, Vipers SC, Express FC, Kitara FC, SC Villa and URA FC have struggled to secure consistent group-stage representation.

KCCA reached the Caf Champions League group stages in 2018, followed by Vipers in 2022/23. Financial constraints remain a major obstacle.

Unlike Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns and Young Africans, Ugandan clubs rely heavily on limited sponsorship and gate collections, restricting recruitment, travel and squad depth.

Difficult draws, limited continental experience and player turnover further undermine competitiveness, while weaknesses in youth development, administration and long-term investment compound the problem.

The contrast is stark in the PAMOJA era. Uganda and Kenya have no clubs in the group stages, while Tanzania has four: Simba SC and Young Africans in the Champions League, and Azam FC and Singida Black Stars in the Confederation Cup. Kitara and Vipers are expected to receive $100,000 each from Caf.
