Cardinals owner latest NFL big dog to make political leaning clear with donation
Arizona Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill

Arizona Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill has made his political leanings clear by donating over $300K to Republican political candidates and committees during the 2026 midterm election cycle.

Bidwill, 61, has become the latest NFL owner to align himself with the Republican Party, following the likes of Jerry Jones (Dallas Cowboys) and Woody Johnson (New York Jets), who have also emerged as prolific Republican donors amid the ongoing midterm elections.

Campaign finance data compiled by OpenSecrets and Front Office Sports has revealed that the vast majority of NFL owners align closely with the Republican Party, triggering mixed reactions amongst NFL fans.

Public campaign finance records show that Bidwill has historically directed the vast majority of his political donations to Republican candidates, including approximately $336,500 during the 2026 midterm election cycle.

Notable donations included financial support for former NFL kicker Jay Feely's Republican congressional campaign in Arizona, where he is competing with Democrat Amish Shah for the seat in the state's open 1st District.

Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings recorded by OpenSecrets also show that the Cardinals owner made contributions, including a $59,600 donation to the Hogan Victory Fund during the 2024 Election Cycle and, during the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, a $28,300 donation to a committee backing Chris Christie.

Bidwill, however, is far from the only NFL owner to pledge financial support to the Republicans during the 2024 and 2026 election cycles, with team owners pouring more than $18 million into federal midterm races alone, with over 80 percent of the aggregate funds backing conservative candidates and committees.

One of the biggest donations in this year's cycle came from Jets owner Johnson, who, alongside his wife, directed over $2 million in 2026 to top pro-Trump entities and conservative party committees, while Cowboys owner Jones directly cut a $1 million check to the pro-Trump super PAC MAGA Inc.

Elsewhere, Denver Broncos co-owner Rob Walton has been the most financially active political donor in the league, with records showing he contributed over $17.6 million during the 2024 cycle and nearly $9 million for the 2026 midterms.

His largest contributions have gone to the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity Action super PAC, which boosts Republican candidates in key Senate battlegrounds.

There are, of course, some NFL owners backing the Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections, including Seattle Seahawks owner Vinod Khosla, who has donated nearly $2 million to Democratic political campaigns and committees.

According to Front Office Sports, Khosla, who agreed to purchase the Seahawks for $9.612 billion back in July, is one of the few backing blue, with his donation going to a Senate Democratic PAC.

Khosla's spending was the second-most among all NFL owners in this election cycle, behind only the Broncos' Walton. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank was the only other NFL owner on the list.
