Kaiserslautern narrowly beat Nuremberg to jump into the top three, after Wolfsburg drew at Bochum and Heidenheim were held by Energie Cottbus as they lost ground on Hertha Berlin, who snatched a late win to extend their lead at the Bundesliga 2 summit. Things remain very tight at the bottom, meanwhile, with the teams in positions 13 to 18 now all on eight points.

Matchday 9 results

Bochum 1-1 Wolfsburg
Goals: 0-1 Reese 2’, 1-1 Klaiber 63’

Kento Shiogai had a stoppage-time strike disallowed as Sean Klaiber’s first Bundesliga 2 goal denied promotion-chasing Wolfsburg all three points. Former Hertha Berlin frontman Fabian Reese volleyed home Muhammed Damar’s pass to give the Wolves an early lead, but Bochum equalised 18 minutes into the second half when Klaiber lashed home from just inside the box. Shiogai thought he had netted the winner when he capitalised on Karol Mets’ late error, but the goal was ruled out for handball.

Hertha Berlin 1-0 Arminia Bielefeld
Goals: 1-0 Brekalo 90’+3 (pen.)

League leaders Hertha Berlin extended their unbeaten start to nine games after overcoming Arminia Bielefeld with a late Josip Brekalo penalty. Sebastian Grønning and Oluwaseun Adewumi both came close to breaking the deadlock for the Old Lady, but Bielefeld stood firm. Arminia’s best chance arrived shortly after the interval when Maximilian Großer headed wide before Hertha’s Luca Schuler saw his goal ruled out for a handball. Three minutes into added time, Brekalo converted from the spot to net his fifth of the season, bringing an end to Bielefeld’s three-game unbeaten streak.

Magdeburg 6-1 Karlsruhe
Goals: 1-0 Żukowski 39’ (pen), 2-0 Żukowski 51’ (pen), 3-0 García MacNulty 54’, 4-0 Iyoha 59’, 5-0 Šimić 66’, 5-1 Ofli 82’, 6-1 Mergner 90’+3

Magdeburg bounced back emphatically from their defeat against Dynamo Dresden with a stunning 6-1 thrashing of Karlsruhe at the Avnet Arena. The visitors started brightly and had an early goal ruled out for offside, but Mateusz Żukowski broke the deadlock from the penalty spot shortly before half-time. The hosts then produced a devastating second-half display, with Żukowski converting another penalty before Anselmo García MacNulty and Emmanuel Iyoha struck within five minutes of each other. Roko Šimić and Leon Mergner added fifth and sixth goals for Magdeburg to complete the rout, while Deniz Ofli grabbed a late consolation for Karlsruhe, who came crashing back down to earth following their 4-0 win over Darmstadt last weekend.

Heidenheim 1-1 Energie Cottbus
Goals: 0-1 Copado 40’, 1-1 Mhamdi 49’

Heidenheim failed to make the most of Wolfsburg’s dropped points and missed out on the chance to climb into the top three as they could only draw at home to promoted Energie Cottbus. Despite top scorer Justin Butler being among several absentees, Energie went ahead before half-time as Lucas Copado lifted the ball over Thomas Dähne. Heidenheim hit back shortly after the restart when Oualid Mhamdi’s long-range effort deflected past Marcel Lotka. The hosts had 32 attempts on goal – the most by a team in Bundesliga 2 this season – but couldn’t force a winner.

St. Pauli shared the spoils for the sixth time in nine league games as Darmstadt picked up a morale-boosting point. Clear-cut openings were few and far between in the first half, with Cologne loanee Youssoupha Niang going closest for Pauli when he fired into the side-netting 10 minutes before the interval. Lars Ritzka narrowly missed the target in the second, while Patric Pfeiffer sent a promising free-kick straight into the visitors’ wall late on.

Nuremberg 0–1 Kaiserslautern
Goals: 0-1 Yardımcı 58‘

An end-to-end first half saw Kaiserslautern dominate the opening exchanges, with the hosts barely able to escape their own half. Miroslav Klose's men eventually grew into the game and began causing problems of their own, with Rayan Ghrieb forcing Julian Krahl into two fantastic saves before the break. Neither side was having much luck breaking the deadlock in the second 45 either, until Erencan Yardımcı's brilliant guided header opened the scoring, eventually sealing all three points for the visitors.

Holstein Kiel 3-0 Dynamo Dresden
Goals: 1-0 Kvitailia 9’, 2-0 Therkelsen 73, 3-0 Harres 85’

Holstein Kiel picked up their first win of the Bundesliga 2 season as they comfortably defeated Dynamo Dresden in front of their own supporters. They needed less than 10 minutes to break the deadlock through Giorgi Kvilitaia, whose effort came on his maiden second-tier start. Dresden, though, were hardly out of the game and had a fantastic chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty in the second half, only for Niklas Hauptmann's spot-kick to be saved by Timon Weiner. The home team ultimately made Dresden pay for their profligacy, with Jonas Therkelsen's brilliant strike and a late Phil Harres strike securing the points. As a result, Kiel jump above Dresden in the table.

Eintracht Braunschweig 2-0 Hannover
Goals: 1-0 Marie 17’, 2-0 Sturm 90’+2

Braunschweig edged Lower Saxony rivals Hannover to record their third league win of the season and leave Sandro Wagner's side in the bottom three. The hosts started brightly and broke the deadlock on 17 minutes, when Junior Zé's shot was parried by goalkeeper Leo Weinkauf and Max Marie slotted home the rebound from point-blank range. Eintracht had to wait until second-half stoppage time to settle the contest, Yann Sturm firing low into the corner to send the home supporters at the Eintracht-Stadion into raptures.

Osnabrück 3-0 Greuther Fürth
Goals: 1-0 Kofi Kyereh 37’, 2-0 Meißner 39’, 3-0 Badjie 75'

Daniel Kofi Kyereh played a starring role on his first start since February 2023 as Osnabrück deservedly beat Fürth. Former Freiburg man Kofi Kyereh, who has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons, coolly slotted home Robin Meißner's pass to break the deadlock late in the first half, before setting up Meißner 101 seconds later to give the hosts a two-goal cushion at the interval. Substitute Ismail Badjie completed the scoring 15 minutes from time, firing through goalkeeper Florian Hellstern's legs to send the hosts into the top half of the table.
