Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has reacted to his tense exchange with Matheus Cunha following the club's dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over AS Roma in the Champions League.

Cunha played a decisive role in the encounter, scoring twice in the closing stages to help Manchester United overturn a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford.

What happened Matheus Cunha against AS Roma?

The Brazilian forward was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card. His first booking came from taking off his shirt during his goal celebration, while the second followed a foul on an opponent.

Following the final whistle, Cunha attempted to join his teammates on the pitch to celebrate the memorable victory. However, Carrick intervened and directed him towards the dressing room, leading to a visibly tense exchange between the two.

Reacting to Cunha's performance and the incident, Carrick praised the forward's quality and commitment, admitting that his determination to make an impact was clear.

The United manager said:

"Matheus can do those things, he has those moments. We put him inside, we swapped him with Bryan at half-time to try to get him in the middle of the pitch."

He added that he was disappointed with how the evening ended for Cunha but acknowledged his desire to give everything for the team. The intervention may also have been intended to prevent Cunha from facing further disciplinary action, as football regulations require dismissed players to leave the vicinity of the field of play.

Despite the disagreement, Carrick's comments suggest that he remains appreciative of what Cunha brings to the Manchester United team.
