Chiefs fans call for Andy Reid's job over decisions in Broncos disaster
Chiefs fans are calling for Andy Reid to be fired after the Broncos matchup

Chiefs fans spent Sunday evening aiming their anger at Andy Reid, and the final drive of a 28-24 loss to the Broncos gave them plenty to work with.

Kansas City led 24-13 late in the third quarter, then watched Denver score twice in the fourth to take the lead. The Chiefs got the ball back with 1:46 left and moved from their own 44 to the Broncos’ 1-yard line, helped by a 32-yard catch by Travis Kelce.

With a timeout in hand and time to spare, they did not run the ball or try a quarterback sneak. Instead, a false start on right tackle Jaylon Moore wiped out what looked like the game-winning touchdown pass to Rashee Rice, backing the Chiefs up to the 6-yard line.

On the final play, Patrick Mahomes was pressured and sacked, and Denver took sole possession of first place in the AFC West at 6-2, with the Chiefs falling to 5-2.

Kansas City had been 14-2 in Mahomes’ starts against the Broncos.

The backlash was loud. One fan wrote, “That loss is on Andy. The players made enough plays to win the game.”

Another posted, “Fire Andy Reid,” and a third said the decisions looked like his final years in Philadelphia. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell called Reid’s fourth-quarter game management “brutal.” Another fan wrote, “The walrus is washed. Time to hang it up.”

Two decisions drew most of the criticism. On the drive before the last one, Reid sent Harrison Butker out for a 54-yard field goal in the rain with the Chiefs up 24-21, and the kick missed, giving Denver the ball with 2:31 left.

Punting and pinning the Broncos deep was the alternative, and Butker had not made a kick of 50 or more yards this season. Denver needed only two plays to score, with Jonah Coleman going 51 yards on a catch-and-run and then punching in from 5 yards out.

The second was the lack of a sneak or a run at the goal line, a call many argued was obvious, though Mahomes famously dislocated his kneecap on a sneak in a 2019 playoff game.

Reid did address the false start. “I didn’t see it. That’s one man’s opinion,” he said. “I saw him move his head, but I didn’t see a false start.”

Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, called it “the weakest call I have ever seen” on Instagram. Reid also said the penalties were something the team must address. Kansas City was flagged 11 times for more than 100 yards.

The defense shared the blame. It allowed two fourth-down touchdown passes from the 1-yard line by Bo Nix, and a 73-yard catch-and-run by rookie Emmett Johnson on the other side kept the Chiefs ahead early. Kansas City finished with 399 yards.
