Tidiam Gomis makes Champions League breakthrough with landmark goal at the Bernabeu

Tidiam Gomis scored his first Champions League goal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, as RB Leipzig suffered a 4-1 defeat by Real Madrid.

The 20-year-old French forward of Senegalese origin needed only around 20 minutes to make an impact in the third matchday of the competition. Introduced in the 73rd minute, Gomis capped his appearance with a composed finish against one of European football’s most celebrated clubs.

Played into the centre by Christoph Baumgartner, Gomis controlled the ball before striking with his right foot beyond Thibaut Courtois. The finish was his first goal in the Champions League, achieved on his third appearance in the competition and at one of football’s most famous stadiums.

Although Kylian Mbappe also impressed for Real Madrid, Gomis provided a positive moment for Leipzig despite the heavy defeat.

From Caen to Leipzig

Gomis came through the academy at Stade Malherbe Caen and was regarded as one of the Normandy club’s leading prospects. His progress with the first team, however, was more gradual than some expectations had suggested.

He made 39 appearances for Caen’s senior side, scoring four goals and providing two assists. In February 2025, he left the club to join RB Leipzig, moving to Germany in search of further development in an environment known for working with young players.

The transfer represented an important change in his career. At Leipzig, Gomis has continued his education at the highest level while competing for a place in a squad operating in European football.

A growing contribution

His goal in Madrid follows an encouraging start to the 2026-27 season. According to the published statistics for the campaign, Gomis has played 10 matches, scoring three goals and supplying three assists in all competitions.

He had already caught the eye in Leipzig’s 6-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on 10 September 2026, when he produced an impressive individual move.

Those numbers point to increasing influence in attack, although Gomis still has to find greater consistency if he is to establish himself permanently at the highest level. His performance against Real Madrid demonstrated his ability to remain composed when presented with a decisive opportunity.

The path from Caen to the Bernabeu has already given Gomis a notable milestone. One goal does not make him an established star, but finding the net against Courtois in a Champions League match represents a significant stage in his development.

His next challenge will be to build on that moment, earn more playing time and become a regular part of the RB Leipzig team. The club’s next fixture is against Elversberg in the seventh round of the German league.
