Of their last 12 ties played in this competition, the Reds are facing opposition from London for the eighth time.

Liverpool have played 55 League Cup ties against teams from the capital, winning 34.

Their last three Anfield defeats in the League Cup have all been inflicted by London teams – Chelsea (2018-19), Arsenal on penalties (2020-21) and Crystal Palace (2025-26).

This is only the second campaign in the last nine that both of the Reds' opening two matches in the competition have been at Anfield – last season being the other.

Liverpool are four goals short of recording 300 against Chelsea in all competitions.

The Reds have faced the Blues more times in a penalty shootout than they have against any other team (four), winning all of them.

Should Virgil van Dijk get on the scoresheet in this game, he will become the third-oldest player to score for the club in the League Cup (35 years and 112 days), after Gary McAllister (36 years and 288 days) and Sir Kenny Dalglish (35 years and 358 days).

Joe Gomez, who captained Liverpool in the last round against Tottenham Hotspur, has made more League Cup appearances than any other current Red (21).

Gomez has skippered Liverpool seven times in his career to date, with five of those occasions in this competition.

A yellow card for either Ronald Araujo or Milos Kerkez will see them miss the next round, should Liverpool progress.

Xabi Alonso takes charge of a team at Anfield for the third time. He lost 4-0 with Bayer Leverkusen in November 2024 and, almost a year to the day later, his Real Madrid side were beaten 1-0.

Chelsea have won six of their 10 fixtures in all competitions this season, with one draw and three defeats. They have scored 25 goals and conceded 18.

Four of their players have featured in all 10 matches up to this point – Maxence Lacroix, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto.

Chelsea's last win at Anfield came in March 2021, when Mason Mount scored the only goal of a behind-closed-doors Premier League contest.
