Erik ten Hag suggests Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘holding his country captive’ in scathing interview

Erik ten Hag has once more launched an attack on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has launched a fresh attack on Cristiano Ronaldo, accusing the Portugal captain of putting his personal brand ahead of his country’s interests.

Ten Hag, who endured a difficult relationship with Ronaldo during their time together at Old Trafford, believes the 41-year-old is preventing Portugal from reaching their full potential.

The Dutchman, now technical director at FC Twente, also questioned whether Ronaldo remains capable of competing at the highest level.

Speaking in an interview with Dutch publication Voetbal International, Ten Hag suggested Ronaldo’s priorities have shifted away from achieving success with his team-mates.

“Cristiano Ronaldo acts as if he were bigger than the club and country he plays for. It’s not about the team,” he said.

“It’s about his brand. Maximizing his profits, that’s what he’s all about.

“Now he’s holding his country captive. A whole crop. While Portugal has a great team, without him things turn better.”

Ten Hag claims Ronaldo can no longer compete at the highest level

Ten Hag also questioned whether players of Ronaldo’s age can continue performin against elite opposition.

“At country level, older players can still play a role. At club level, in the Champions League, you don’t see this anymore,” he said.

“35, 36 years; then it’s just over. With some exceptions. But nature catches up with everyone. Also Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Despite his criticism, Ten Hag insisted he was not attempting to diminish Ronaldo’s extraordinary achievements throughout his career.

“He was a great footballer, of course, that’s beyond dispute. But it’s not him anymore.

“I don’t want to be right, but it’s clear: he won’t win anything appealing with his team anymore.”
