Premier League icon was left penniless and cleaned toilets after blowing £10k-a-week wages

A former Premier League striker earned huge sums at the height of his career before having to take on a £400-a-week job cleaning toilets.

Former Sunderland and Coventry City striker Kevin Kyle took on work aboard ships as his playing career neared its end, swapping professional football for a job to purely helped pay his family's bills. The former Scotland international earned £400 a week as a ferry storeman, with duties including cleaning toilets. That was in sharp contrast to his reported £10,000-a-week football salary, a figure he later disputed. Two of his former clubs meet on Saturday, when Coventry host Sunderland. Frank Lampard's side head into the match on the back of successive defeats, including a home loss to Fulham last weekend.

It was approaching the twilight of Kyle's career in 2014 that he was discovered working on board a fleet of vessels in the Shetland Islands. And it involved undertaking thankless tasks such as stacking stock and cleaning lavatories for offshore labourers.

The Daily Record contacted Kyle, 45, for comment at the time. His response was understandably brief as he said simply: "I'm trying to provide for my family."

Twelve years ago, the former Rangers striker brought his football career to an end at Newton Stewart. He netted a hat-trick in his sole outing for the side, the 11th of his career, before confirming his retirement soon afterwards.

During that period, he was photographed working on a former ferry, the Regina Baltic. The vessel had been converted into a 'floating hotel', offering lodging for offshore workers.

Kyle, who has since built a thriving career in podcasting, had performed in England's top division at his professional peak but also battled a serious gambling addiction. It was reported he would routinely spend £7,000 weekly on wagers during his highest-earning years.

In a stark confession, Kyle, who netted 17 goals in 106 appearances for Sunderland, once told the Glasgow Times he would volunteer for laundry duties or kitchen work so he "could be away and not see anyone."

He also insisted reports of his maximum salary were vastly inflated.

Countdown to Kickoff: The Essential 26/27 Sky Sports Bundle

Sky's Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle includes at least 215 live Premier League clashes across the 2026/27 season, with more than 1,500 games from the EFL and beyond, plus F1, golf and darts.

This introductory offer saves £384 compared to the standard price, with every package also providing 100 regular channels alongside free Netflix and discovery+ subscriptions.

"Now I'm classed as the 10 grand a week footballer who worked on the ships and is a taxi driver," he said. "I'm now labelled that and it's not how it was, so it felt really bad. As time went by I had to keep working, it was the right thing to do. Now I've got other ambitions but I never thought giving up football would be difficult.

"I don't miss playing football but I find it difficult to adjust to the feelings of people judging you for what you do. When you leave football, you tell people you're a taxi driver and people say, 'What the f*** are you doing that for?'

"When really, if I'd turned round and said I was a coach at Hearts' youth team, people would say, 'Superb'. But that coach might only be earning £12,000 a year, training the kids one night a week. That won't pay the bills in my life."

Kyle became part of the Open Goal podcast in 2018 and established himself as a consistent presence on the programme for years. He has subsequently broadened his media commitments and now also works as a mental health speaker to assist others by sharing his own journey.
