In a dramatic boardroom shake-up dictated by international monitors, Athletics South Africa (ASA) has appointed renowned coach and administrator Jean Verster as acting president with immediate effect, placing one of the sport’s most technically respected figures in charge of averting a global ban.

Verster’s elevation occurred at an ASA board meeting on October 30, following a direct directive issued by Zakhele Dlamini, president of the Southern African Confederation of Athletics (SACA) and the designated representative for World Athletics (WA) and the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).

The reshuffle followed the voluntary departure from the board meeting of ASA vice-president John Mathane, who had served as acting president after the suspension of disgraced former leader James Moloi.

Dlamini instructed the remaining board members to appoint an acting president from among themselves. The board unanimously turned to Verster, the longstanding chairperson of the track and field commission.

Unlike the career politicians who have dominated ASA’s fractious boardroom, Verster brings authentic track pedigree as both an elite runner and a world-class coach.

During his competitive running career in the late 1980s and 1990s, Verster was one of South Africa’s premier middle-distance stars.

A sub-four-minute miler with a 3:55.76 personal best, he was a national cross-country champion and held the South African two-mile record as the country emerged from sporting isolation.

After retiring from competition, Verster transformed Potchefstroom into a world-renowned middle-distance base.

As manager of the North-West University High Performance Institute and head of Potch Track Club, he coached double Olympic 800m champion Caster Semenya, 2012 Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos, and turned the town into a winter training sanctuary for hundreds of international Olympians.

At administrative level, Verster has headed Athletics Central North West, chaired ASA’s track and field commission, and managed Team South Africa at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Verster’s appointment represents a tactical shift for ASA, installing a figure with genuine credibility in Monaco. However, his tenure begins in an administrative pressure cooker.

World Athletics has set a strict six-month deadline for ASA to adopt an overhauled constitution featuring term limits, independent directorships, and athlete representation.

Crucially, the world body has demanded the eventual dissolution of the entire sitting board for fresh elections or South Africa faces an Article 13 suspension – locking athletes out of international competition and derailing preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Verster’s interim mandate runs until the ASA council meets on November 28. Before then, Verster and Dlamini will lead a high-stakes strategic retreat from November 13 to 15 to draft an organisational roadmap aligned with global benchmarks.

If Verster can steer the provincial delegates into adopting the reforms, South Africa may avert international exile. If internal factions resist, even the decorated mentor may find ASA’s administrative crisis impossible to run out of.
