Not Conte, Hurzeler or Howe - Man Utd 'decide' on Michael Carrick's replacement

Michael Carrick already appears to be on the brink at Manchester United.

Manchester United bosses have reportedly chosen their preferred candidate to replace Michael Carrick, who is perilously close to being sacked after a disastrous start to the campaign. Having won just two matches in all competitions so far this season, the 45-year-old's position in the dugout is under fierce scrutiny. His reign took another humiliating turn on Wednesday night, when United were beaten 4-1 by Champions League debutants Como.

A number of big names have already been linked with the potential vacancy at United, including Antonio Conte, Fabian Hurzeler and Eddie Howe.

However, it seems the Red Devils could go down a different route if Carrick is relieved of his duties in the not-too-distant future.

That's because former Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has already been sounded out for preliminary discussions, according to talkSPORT.

It's claimed that the 39-year-old is high on United's list of possible replacements for Carrick, who faces the sack just five months after being appointed on a permanent basis.

Nagelsmann was among the candidates to manage United before they decided to appoint Carrick following his impressive interim spell in charge.

He is currently a free agent, having stepped down as Germany head coach after the World Cup, meaning United wouldn't have to pay any compensation to secure his signature.

The report adds that Hurzeler is also admired by the Red Devils, while Conte's representatives have indicated that he would be keen on the role, although United are yet to express an interest in the Italian's services.

Howe is believed to be among the other candidates, with the former Newcastle boss currently unattached after leaving St James' Park earlier this year.

Mauricio Pochettino and Kieran McKenna are named as outside contenders, having been involved in previous processes.

It remains to be seen whether Carrick will be given his marching orders in the coming days, or if he will be afforded more time to turn things around.

He apologised to United supporters following the defeat to Como, saying: "I went over to the [away] end and I care about this football club as much as anyone, if not more.

"You know, the position that I’m in, and what I value this football club, and for us to play in that way, it’s not acceptable."
