Tianjin’s Jinnan district celebrated the return of judo athlete Han Qi, who secured a bronze medal

A Bronze Medal and a Viral Moment of Cultural Pride

Tianjin’s Jinnan district celebrated the return of judo athlete Han Qi, who secured a bronze medal in the men’s 90kg category at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, marking a historic achievement for Tianjin’s men’s judo program. The victory, achieved with a decisive performance in the bronze medal match, was followed by a viral moment when Han, speaking in his native Jinnan dialect during a CCTV interview, explained, “I only speak Jinnan dialect; I tried to switch but couldn’t.” The clip, which highlighted his unyielding connection to his roots, quickly gained traction online.

From Mischievous Child to Asian Games Medalist: The Making of a Champion

Born in Jinnan, he began his judo career at age 10 after being identified by coach Li Jing, who recognized his physical potential during a school talent search. Despite initial reluctance, Han joined the Jinnan Children’s Sports School’s judo program, where Li’s rigorous training transformed him from a “troublemaker” into a disciplined athlete.

A Family Sacrifice in the Shadow of Triumph

The road to the Asian Games was not without challenges. In 2023, while preparing for a national event, Han’s father was diagnosed with cancer. The family chose to keep the news from him to avoid distraction, a sacrifice Han only learned of after the tournament.

The Coaches Who Shaped a Champion: Discipline, Strategy, and Resilience

Three coaches played important roles in Han's development. Li Jing, his foundational coach, emphasized discipline and technical precision. Han explained that their guidance helped him perform under pressure during the Asian Games.

A Legacy in the Making: Inspiring the Next Generation and the Road Ahead

Han’s success has inspired a new generation of athletes in Jinnan. Upon returning home, he visited the Jinnan Children’s Sports School, where he demonstrated techniques to younger trainees. Among them was his nephew, Wang Puhang, who aspires to follow in his uncle’s footsteps. “My uncle is my role model,” Wang said, noting his own rigorous training schedule. The school, which has produced over 100 athletes for higher-level teams, attributes its success to a “grassroots-to-elite” system that combines academic education with athletic development.
