After attempts to play the game on Saturday were thwarted by the weather, there were no such issues on Tuesday night as Ryan Hutchinson’s side grabbed a deserved victory, but they were pushed all the way by a dogged New Mills side.
Heys dominated the early stages, creating several chances, but it was not until the 24th minute that they found the breakthrough.
After a Louis Hutchinson corner was only half cleared, Takura Sambizi recycled the ball, delivering a cross for Captain James Badrock to head home.
As Heys remained in control, Bryson Appleton twice tested the visitors’ goalkeeper, former Heys man Callum Jakovlevs, with a shot and a header as the home side looked to add to their lead.
However, it was the visitors who finished the half the stronger and on the stroke of half time they levelled matters.
James Green found space to go through and steer past Heys ’keeper Jack Buckley for the equaliser.
On the restart Heys regained the initiative and Jamal Crawford went close with a header.
A superb shot from Appleton in the 55th minute brought a fine save from Jakovlevs, but from the ensuing corner Heys regained the lead.
As the visitors struggled to clear, a scramble in the box saw the ball fall to Appleton to finish from close range.
Heys remained largely in control but New Mills put up stiff resistance whilst posing a threat going forward to keep the outcome in the melting pot.
It was not until the 89th minute that Heys could begin to breathe more easily when they added a third goal.
Just two minutes after coming on as a substitute, Louis Holt swooped low to head home a Crawford cross.
However, the visitors’ spirit remained undimmed and a minute later they pulled a goal back when Will Frankish slotted home.
It made for a nervy five minutes of injury time before Heys could relax and celebrate victory and look forward to a trip to Litherland Remyca in the 3rd Round on November 21.
It’s FA Vase Second Round action for Heys on Saturday (3pm) as they travel across Manchester to face their former NW Counties League rivals who were laterally moved to the Midlands League Premier Division in the summer.
They are presently seventh in the table with 21 points from 14 games.
Having reached the quarter-finals last season, Didsbury were given a bye to the second round this season whilst Heys triumphed 2-1 in the 1st Round at Charnock Richard on Saturday, having themselves had a bye from the Qualifying Rounds.
Heys' last trip to Didsbury, in April, ended in a 5-2 defeat that also brought to an end their run of ten consecutive League wins.
They will hope to avenge that loss this weekend and extend their current winning streak.
