Real Madrid continued their impressive run in the UEFA Champions League with a convincing victory over RB Leipzig, maintaining their 100 per cent record in the competition.
Bernardo Silva opened his goalscoring account for Real Madrid after joining from Manchester City in the summer, finding the net from close range two minutes before half-time to give the Spanish giants the lead.
Arda Guler added the second goal with a close-range finish, while Kylian Mbappe extended his remarkable scoring record to 12 goals in 12 appearances this season.
Summer signing Yan Diomande, who joined for £120 million, also found the net against his former club late in the encounter.
Leipzig started brightly and looked the more threatening side for much of the first half. However, their failure to convert their chances proved costly, with Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois producing impressive saves to deny Christopher Nkunku and Romulo.
Real gradually grew into the contest, and Silva broke the deadlock after Guler’s effort took a deflection off a defender before squeezing through goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt’s legs.
Vandevoordt later produced an excellent save to push Federico Valverde’s powerful effort around the post early in the second half.
However, he could do little to prevent Real from doubling their advantage when Guler met Mbappe’s header across goal for a simple tap-in.
Mbappe continued his search for another goal, narrowly missing the target after connecting with Jude Bellingham’s cut-back.
The French forward eventually got his reward late in the game, curling a superb finish into the corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Leipzig managed to pull one back through Tidiam Gomis, who finished off a well-worked attacking move.
However, Real responded just two minutes later when substitute Diomande unleashed a spectacular volley from outside the box against his former side.
The victory keeps Real Madrid’s perfect Champions League campaign intact as they prepare for a crucial domestic encounter against Barcelona in the first Clasico of the season on Sunday, 25 October, at 20:00 GMT.
Jose Mourinho’s side will then travel to Greece to face AEK Athens on Wednesday, 4 November, at 17:45 GMT, while Leipzig are scheduled to host Manchester City later that evening at 20:00 GMT.
