Nigeria’s Samson Adamu Named CAF General Secretary

The Confederation of African Football has appointed Nigerian official Samson Adamu as its new General Secretary.

Adamu had been carrying out the role on an interim basis since March, following Veron Mosengo-Omba’s departure. Mosengo-Omba subsequently became president of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s football federation.

Quick facts

  • Samson Adamu has been confirmed as CAF General Secretary.
  • He had served in an acting role since March.
  • The CAF Executive Committee approved the appointment last week.
  • The formal confirmation was published on Sunday, November 1.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe said the selection came after an extensive hiring process. The vacancy was publicly advertised and a number of applicants were interviewed.

Adamu arrived at CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before later becoming Director of Tournaments and Events. He has been closely involved in staging leading African football events, including the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.

A graduate of FIFA’s Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, Adamu will be responsible for CAF’s everyday administrative operations. He will also assist in delivering the confederation’s strategic agenda.

CAF’s past General Secretaries have included three members of Egypt’s Fahmy family across successive generations. Mourad Fahmy served from 1961 to 1982, followed by his son Mustapha from 1982 until 2010, while grandson Amr held the position between 2017 and 2019.
