LeBron James shocked the basketball world by signing with the Philadelphia 76ers in the offseason, and he certainly doesn’t regret the decision. After the 76ers’ 98-93 win over the New York Knicks at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Friday, James was asked in his press conference how much fun he’s having on his new team and how he feels about the decision to come to Philadelphia.

“I’m having a great time,” James said, via PHLY Sports. “Having a great time. I mean, I love what we’re bringing to the table every night. I love our competitive spirit. Guys show up to work, guys ready to work hard, and it’s a fun group, too… I think I’ve said it before; I’m like a big a** kid, to be completely honest, but these guys are great to be around, and I’m more than happy that I made the decision to come.”

The 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves were the finalists in the James sweepstakes. The Cavaliers and the Heat were seen as the likeliest landing spots for the 41-year-old in free agency, as they are his former teams.

James, however, signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers with a player option for the second year. Almost no one saw this coming, but he was going to a very talented team.

James joined forces with Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey on the 76ers. They instantly became a serious title contender with him, but were expected to struggle a bit early on as these big names adjusted to playing together. That hasn’t been the case, though.

The 76ers improved to 5-1 with the win over the Knicks and have the joint-best record in the Eastern Conference. James actually came up big in the clutch in this one. The 22-time All-Star drilled a fadeaway over OG Anunoby to put the 76ers up 91-89 with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter and then tipped in Maxey’s missed layup to put the hosts up five with 11.9 seconds remaining.

“As far as the two shots, just trying to be aggressive one-on-one on the block versus OG,” James said. “I was able to get to my fadeaway, knock that down. And then Reese draw so much attention from the layup, kind of miss it a little bit. I was able to tip in, right place at the right time.”

James finished with 20 points (8-15 FG), nine rebounds, eight assists, one steal, and one block against the Knicks in what was also an NBA Cup game. 76ers head coach Nick Nurse felt this was the forward’s best game for them, and he should keep improving as time goes by.

The 76ers will be in action next against the Charlotte Hornets at Spectrum Center on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. It is the second night of a back-to-back, so it will be interesting to see if James features in that one. This is the second back-to-back of this young season for the 76ers, and James didn’t feature in both games in the last one.
