Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono "would never intend to hurt anyone" and is "suffering" following the death of Jesus de Miguel. The Tenerife player, 30, died on Tuesday morning following a collision with Owono during the closing stages of a Spanish second division match. Police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, though that is standard practice under Spanish law. Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor, Jose Luis Sanchez-Jauregui, has told local media that criminal proceedings are "very unlikely."

Andorra centre-back Lautaro Spatz has spoken out about the tragedy, saying his team-mates are "completely shattered, speechless and filled with a sadness that is hard to explain." He also spoke out in defence of Owono, who reportedly broke down when De Miguel's death was confirmed.

Writing on Instagram, Spatz said: "I also want to say a few words about my team-mate, our goalkeeper and friend, who is deeply affected by what happened. Those of us who know him know the kind of person he is, how much he is suffering right now, and that he would never intend to hurt anyone.

"In football, there are unforeseen incidents, but no one could ever imagine that one of them would lead to such tragic consequences. Today, football is the least of our concerns. All that remains is to stand by them in their grief, show the utmost respect and send all our strength to the family and to those who are suffering this terrible loss. Rest in peace, Demi."

Spatz also wrote: "There are moments when football ceases to make sense. Moments that mark you for life and make you realise just how fragile life can be.

"What we have experienced is something none of us will ever forget. It is a tragedy that has left us completely shattered, speechless, and filled with a sadness that is hard to explain.

"First and foremost, I want to express my deepest condolences and all my affection to Jesus's family, friends, and loved ones, as well as to all 'chicharrera' supporters and the whole football family.

"Since yesterday, the entire FC Andorra squad has been left in shock, devastated, and deeply affected by what has happened. It is a tragedy that we never could have imagined experiencing on a football pitch."

The collision occurred as Owono raced from his goal to challenge De Miguel for the ball in stoppage time. Having been in a serious but stable condition on Monday, his condition worsened. The Canary Islands confirmed his passing in a statement on Tuesday.
