Barcelona eye January move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie

Barcelona are reportedly exploring a January move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie, who is said to be dissatisfied with his limited playing time during the 2026/27 season.

The 24-year-old Ecuador international has made seven appearances for Arsenal, starting only two, and has played 256 minutes in total. By comparison, fellow centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes has already featured for 1,215 minutes.

Hincapie’s opportunities have been restricted following the arrival of Ezri Konsa, while William Saliba’s eventual return from injury could reduce his involvement further. Spanish media reports suggest Barcelona sporting director Deco has contacted the player’s representatives to discuss the possibility of a move.

Barcelona have enjoyed a highly successful 2026/27 campaign despite defeats by PSG and Real Madrid, but concerns remain over their defence. Their aggressive defensive line is often positioned around the halfway line, leaving them vulnerable to opponents with considerable pace.

The system can work against less formidable opposition, particularly when Barcelona’s attack is able to compensate by scoring heavily. However, PSG and Real Madrid have exposed its weaknesses against Europe’s strongest sides, raising the prospect that the Catalans’ defensive structure could again prevent them from winning the Champions League.

A new centre-back, preferably one with significant experience, is therefore viewed as a potential priority. The continued goals of Raphinha and Lamine Yamal may not be enough to address that weakness.

Hincapie’s profile could suit Barcelona. As a left-footed defender, he could provide competition for Gerard Martin and form a partnership with Pau Cubarsi. He can also cover at left-back and left midfield, offering the versatility that would appeal to the Blaugranes.

Any January agreement could be complicated by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s reluctance to sanction mid-season departures. Hincapie’s loan move from Bayer Leverkusen became permanent only in the summer, and his contract runs until 2031. Arsenal consequently have no pressing financial or contractual reason to sell.

His performances when selected also make his limited role notable. Hincapie has attempted 83 tackles since joining Arsenal, the fourth-highest total in the squad. He has made 72 headed clearances, ranking third, while his 125 clearances place him among only five Arsenal players to reach 100.

His one-on-one duel success rate is 61.89%, the best at Arsenal among players to have contested at least 100 duels. Konsa and Bruno Guimaraes have marginally higher percentages, but neither has reached that number of duels.

Hincapie is one of nine Arsenal players to have contested more than 100 aerial duels and has won 54 of them. His passing accuracy stands at 87.12%, one of the highest figures in the squad.

The figures underline his contribution despite his restricted minutes. With Barcelona searching for a defender and Deco reportedly making initial enquiries, Hincapie’s future could become a key talking point during the January transfer window.
