Alex Pereira isn’t going to stick around at heavyweight if he’s not having success.
There have been questions about Pereira’s heavyweight future since he made the move up from light heavyweight and vacated his title.
‘Poatan’ is set to give this change another shot when he returns later this year to face Sergei Pavlovich over five rounds.
Pereira has said he’ll retire before he becomes a stepping stone, and the same goes for his heavyweight plans.
'Poatan' is now in an awkward position after leaving light heavyweight
It was recently said by Magomed Ankalaev that Alex Pereira debated moving back down to light heavyweight before booking his next fight.
In a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, ‘Poatan’ said that his competitiveness meant that he didn’t want to give up on his goal of becoming heavyweight champion.
Despite this, the Brazilian star isn’t planning on staying in the division if it becomes clear that he’d be more successful in another weight class.
Pereira voiced some frustrations during the interview, claiming that he was previously told by the UFC that he’d be fighting Ciryl Gane or Josh Hokit next.
He believes that facing Hokit would have been a “much easier” matchup for him than the Sergei Pavlovich one that is set for December.
With that in mind, Pereira said that a defeat at UFC 335 will end his heavyweight campaign.
“If I lose, I’m not going to stay at heavyweight,” he said. “Everyone knows I’m lighter than all those heavyweights. So I’m not going to keep trying to match their strength when I could do something else and be better off.”
Many felt like Alex Pereira went about his heavyweight transition the wrong way after seeing him get stopped at the White House in June.
‘Poatan’ put on a lot of weight in order to fit the weight class, but it didn’t appear to benefit him.
Pereira revealed on The Ariel Helwani Show that for his second heavyweight outing, he plans on coming in around 10 pounds lighter than he did previously.
“I just feel that I’ve gotta be a little lighter,” he said.
