Fatal Toledo Train Crash Halts 24 Copa del Rey First-Round Ties

The Royal Spanish Football Federation has called off 24 Copa del Rey ties due to be played on Wednesday after a fatal train crash in Spain’s central Toledo province.

The games formed part of the opening round of the cup. The decision was taken in tribute to those affected by the disaster, which has claimed at least 30 lives.

Quick facts

  • Twenty-four first-round Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed.
  • The move follows a collision involving two high-speed trains in Toledo province.
  • At least 30 people were killed in the accident.
  • Tuesday’s 18 first-round fixtures were played as planned.
  • Rail links between Madrid and Andalusia were disrupted, affecting some clubs and officials.

The RFEF said Spanish football was united in mourning and offered its support to the emergency response and those impacted by the tragedy.

“The whole Spanish football community shares the grief caused by this tragedy and is available to help the authorities assist the victims of this devastating accident,” the federation said.

It added that confirmation of replacement dates and revised kick-off times for the delayed cup matches would be issued later.

The crash happened on Wednesday morning and involved two high-speed services in Toledo. The resulting interruption to train operations between Madrid and Andalusia also complicated travel plans for several teams and club representatives.

All 18 Copa del Rey first-round matches scheduled for Tuesday were completed. The 24 games originally set for Wednesday will remain on hold until the federation announces new dates.
