The 17-year-old reaches the Chennai Open quarter-finals, becoming the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2012 to achieve the feat.
Indian tennis teenager Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi has achieved a significant milestone at the Chennai Open, becoming the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2012 to reach the quarter-finals of a WTA Tour-level singles tournament.
The 17-year-old secured her place in the last eight on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, after defeating Poland's Weronika Falkowska 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.
The victory marks an important moment for Indian women's tennis, which has been waiting for another player to reach this stage of a WTA Tour singles competition since Mirza's appearance at the Pattaya Open in Thailand in February 2012.
Playing as a wildcard in front of home supporters, Maaya delivered a composed performance against Falkowska, who was ranked No. 277 in the world.
After taking the opening set 6-4, the Indian teenager maintained her advantage in the second, winning it 6-3 to complete the match in straight sets.
Her progress followed an impressive opening-round victory against Poland's Katarzyna Kawa, the tournament's eighth seed.
That encounter proved considerably more challenging, with Maaya recovering from a 5-2 deficit in the deciding set before securing a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5) victory.
According to the WTA, the win over Kawa marked her first victory against a player ranked inside the world's top 120.
Maaya's breakthrough in Chennai follows a series of promising performances on the international tennis circuit.
In February 2025, she reached the semi-finals of the Mumbai WTA 125 tournament as a qualifier, making the achievement in only her fourth professional tournament. She defeated three players ranked inside the world's top 300 during that run.
She continued her progress in October 2026 by winning her first professional singles title at the ITF W35 tournament in Lagos, Portugal.
After entering the competition through qualifying, she defeated Spain's Celia Cervino Ruiz 6-4, 6-2 in the final. She also secured the doubles title alongside Ukraine's Yelyzaveta Kotliar.
The ITF reported that Maaya was 17 years and 121 days old when she won the singles title, making her the youngest Indian player on record to win a World Tennis Tour women's singles title at W35 level or above.
Her performances have also strengthened her position in junior tennis. At the time of her Chennai breakthrough, she had climbed to No. 16 in the junior rankings, while her professional singles ranking stood at No. 669.
Maaya's achievement has brought renewed attention to the progress of Indian women's tennis.
Sania Mirza remains one of the country's most successful tennis players. She reached the Pattaya Open quarter-finals in February 2012, marking the previous occasion an Indian woman had progressed to that stage of a WTA Tour-level singles tournament.
Mirza achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 27 and won the Hyderabad Open in 2005. She also reached world No. 1 in doubles, collecting 43 doubles titles, including three Grand Slam championships.
Her professional career ended in 2023.
Maaya's progress represents an encouraging development for Indian tennis, with the teenager now gaining experience against established international competitors.
Following her quarter-final qualification, Maaya is scheduled to face American player Robin Montgomery on Friday, 6 November, for a place in the semi-finals.
The Chennai Open is a WTA 250 tournament held on outdoor hard courts at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai. The 2026 edition runs from 2 to 8 November.
For Maaya, reaching the quarter-finals represents a significant step in her developing professional career. Her performances in Chennai have demonstrated her ability to compete against experienced international players and recover from difficult situations.
As she continues her progress from junior tennis to the professional circuit, her breakthrough has provided a fresh source of encouragement for Indian women's tennis.
