The goalie who was involved in a collision that led to the death of soccer star Jesus de Miguel has spoken out.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 25-year-old Jesús Owono offered his condolences after he and de Miguel, 30, were involved in an incident on the field on Monday, Nov. 2.
“These are the most difficult days of my life,” the FC Andorra athlete said in a message posted to his team’s official social media account and translated from Spanish to English.
“I’m struggling to find the words and finding it very hard to process what has happened,” he continued. “I feel immense pain at the loss of Jesús. I’m thinking of him, his family, and all the people who loved him.”
During the final minutes of Monday’s match, de Miguel, a forward for CD Tenerife in Spain’s Segunda División, was trying to get the ball while playing against FC Andorra when Owono crashed into him, The Guardian previously reported.
The match was tied 2-2, but did not continue after the incident.
de Miguel received medical aid on the field before being transported to the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital in nearby Santa Cruz de Tenerife. During the transport, de Miguel reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated on the way to the hospital, where he later died on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the BBC reported.
“I know there will be many issues to address, and I will face whatever comes with the utmost respect. But right now, honestly, I can’t think of anything other than Jesús and the pain we are experiencing,” Owono continued.
“Rest in peace, Jesús,” he added.
FC Andorra ended their statement by requesting respect during this sensitive time.
Following the fatal incident, Owono reportedly deactivated his social media.
“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today,” CD Tenerife previously said in a statement.
“The family of Jesús de Miguel is grateful for each and every expression of support received, and also requests, from the bottom of their hearts, the utmost respect for their privacy during these terrible times,” the organization continued.
