Esperance de Tunis are expected to headline the seeding for the CAF Champions League group-stage draw, with the 16 qualified clubs now confirmed ahead of Wednesday’s ceremony in Cairo.
The draw will begin at 13:00 French time, which is also the local time in Algeria, Cameroon and Tunisia. It will take place at midday in Morocco and Guinea, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced in a statement on its official website.
The 16 teams will be divided into four groups of four. Esperance de Tunis, who will make a record 24th appearance in the competition, are strongly expected to be placed in Pot One.
They could be joined by RS Berkane, who have qualified for the group stage for only the second time in their history, Pyramids and Zamalek.
Zamalek are the second most successful club in the competition, with five titles, behind record holders Al Ahly. However, Al Ahly are notably absent from this season’s group stage.
Al Hilal Omdurman, Simba SC, the Young Africans and Petro Luanda are expected to form Pot Two.
Pot Three could include MC Alger, three-time defending champions of Algeria, Orlando Pirates, the champions of South Africa, Nouadhibou and Horoya.
The final pot is likely to contain Club Africain, the reigning champions of Tunisia, along with Wiliete, who are competing at this stage for the first time.
Wiliete reached the group stage after producing a surprise result against the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, in the preliminary round.
The other two potential Pot Four teams are Colombe du Sud, the champions of Cameroon, and the Moroccan champions MAS de Fes.
The full list of clubs qualified for the group stage is Esperance de Tunis, Al Hilal Omdurman, Petro Luanda, Club Africain, Colombe Sportive, Nouadhibou, Horoya, MAS de Fes, MC Alger, Orlando Pirates, Pyramids, RS Berkane, Simba SC, Wiliete, the Young Africans and Zamalek.
The Cairo draw will determine the composition of the four groups, with clubs allocated across the four seeding pots.
