Dakar (Senegal): The 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar have witnessed a historic moment as Chinese martial arts, Wushu, debuted on the Olympic stage. For Ousmane Sakho, head coach of Senegal's national Wushu team, seeing his young athletes compete on home soil is a dream fulfilled, one he once thought impossible.

Sakho's journey began decades ago, inspired by a kung fu film. He dedicated himself to promoting Wushu in Senegal, a nation where football reigns supreme. Despite limited resources and recognition for years, his belief in the sport's value for youth never wavered. The unexpected announcement of Wushu as an official medal sport at Dakar 2026 transformed everything.

Appointed coach, Sakho prepared a new generation, including Mahib Amar and Woreye Ndiaye, both 16. The path to the Olympics demanded rigorous training, with Sakho and his athletes undergoing intensive programs in China to master competitive Wushu's precise techniques. Chinese coaches like Zhao Qingjian and Wu Yanan played a crucial role in refining their skills, focusing on flexibility and difficult movements.

While Ndiaye faced an injury and Amar didn't advance to the final, their participation marked a significant milestone. El Hadji Ndiogou Gueye, president of the Senegalese Wushu Federation, highlighted the sport's growth, with over 10,000 practitioners and 400 clubs nationwide. Sakho, measuring success not in medals but in his students' personal growth, affirmed, "When I see these young people find direction in life and learn to stand tall through Wushu, that is worth more than all the medals."
