Iwobi matches Salah’s Premier League appearance record as Fulham beat Coventry

Alex Iwobi moved level with Mohamed Salah as the joint-second most-capped African player in Premier League history during Fulham’s 1-0 victory over Coventry City.

The Nigeria international made his 328th Premier League appearance in Saturday’s match at Coventry Building Society Arena, equalling the Liverpool forward’s total.

Only Kolo Toure has played more Premier League matches among African footballers. The former Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool defender leads the standings with 353 appearances.

Iwobi’s league record includes 100 appearances for Arsenal, 123 for Everton and 104 for Fulham. That makes him Nigeria’s leading player for Premier League appearances, ahead of Shola Ameobi, who made 298.

The 29-year-old can move into outright second place when Fulham face Aston Villa in their next Premier League fixture.

His landmark appearance came as Fulham secured consecutive league victories for the first time this season. Oscar Bobb scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute, earning Alvaro Arbeloa’s side all three points.

Bobb created the opening in a crowded penalty area, weaving past a defender before sending his finish into the bottom corner.

Iwobi began the game on the left wing and played for 73 minutes before being replaced by Cesar Palacios. Although he did not score, he played a significant role in Fulham’s performance.

He recorded 60 touches, completed 51 passes at an accuracy rate of 86.3%, and supplied two key passes and three crosses. His one attempt on goal was blocked at close range after Josh King’s effort had struck the bar.

Calvin Bassey also started for Fulham and helped the visitors preserve a clean sheet.

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard introduced Nigeria internationals Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi as second-half substitutes, but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser.

The win takes Fulham up to 13th in the table, with eight points from eight games.
